NEW YEAR

9 Predictions for 2009

crystal ball

Ed knows you don’t have to be clairvoyant to see the following things coming, but he’s going to look into his crystal ball anyway. Here’s what he predicts happening in the coming year.*

1. All print editors will have to do online work.
The print-only peeps who were resistant to all things web will need to broaden their horizons a bit this year, if they haven’t already. Everyone, save the top two or three at each mag, will have to blog, produce slide shows, or otherwise contribute to their magazines’ sites.

2. Hiring freezes will thaw mid-year.

ASK ED

Can editors just rewrite my stories?

Ed head

Dear Ed,

I discovered that an assistant editor rewrote a 300-word article
that I’d researched and written for the alumni magazine I intern for. Nothing is directly taken from my article besides factual information. She basically trimmed it down and rearranged the order. And, of course, she put her name at the end.

Does this happen to a lot to interns? I feel as though she could have asked me to rewrite it since we had plenty of time. I’m kind of peeved, since that assignment is one of the few I get to do, and I enjoyed working on it.

Ed Announces City Chapter of the Year Winner

Des Moines, Iowa, is home to Meredith Corporation, three newspapers, an alt-weekly—and since 2001, an active Ed2010 chapter. Co-hostesses Renee Freeman-Mulvihill and Katie Nugent have worked hard to organize events, forge relationships with local editors and connect with college students. And in 2008, Des Moines truly stood out among Ed’s 19 chapters—in fact, they were named the first-ever Ed2010 City Chapter of the Year.

Did You Know?

.. that all of the Ed staff, including Ed himself, are full-time magazine editors? And did you further know that everything that they do for Ed (and, duh, you) they do it out of the goodness of their hearts? (Read: no pay.) OK; Just had to clear that up.
