Desired Skills & Experience: Under the direction of the Director of Digital Strategy for Here Media and in consultation with the Editor in Chief of The Advocate, the editor for Out Traveler directs and produces all travel content for The Advocate Group websites and in the print magazine. We expect this person will travel often and should be a lover of the trip and new destinations. She or he will be an imaginative writer and an independent worker. She or he will research and compile several important annual features like those on best places to visit for LGBT travelers while also cultivating an audience of enthusiasts via social media, regular blog posts and with email newsletters. The editor should have a knack for producing online stories that get shared and that come with a charming personality while still imparting the basics of any travel story. The successful Editor of Out Traveler will come to be seen as an expert on all things an LGBT person would want to know about travel.
⦁ Constantly generates story ideas that leverage the web’s appetite for intriguing lists, that wield the power of user-generated content, and that attract casual and habitual travelers.
⦁ Writes features for the magazine that are based on frequent trips taken worldwide while simultaneously updating the website with fresh content.
⦁ Line edits reader-submitted stories from their own trips and find other kinds of partnerships that expand the voices included on Out Traveler.
⦁ Assists with scheduling and assigning of press trips for other members of The Advocate Group staff as they contribute to travel coverage.
⦁ Assists with monitoring news sites and leading publications on a daily basis for events and stories that can be molded into appropriate articles for the website. In addition, build and maintain relationships with outside news sources for future original reporting.
This person in this position must be efficient, well organized, have a strong interest in the world and other people, a commitment to The Advocate as a news-gathering organization, and a broad knowledge of the LGBT experience. Must be a proficient writer who is able to master The Advocate’s house style. Must be able to work with tight resources and remain calm under intense deadline pressure, and be willing and able to work evenings or weekends when needed to meet deadlines or while on press trips. Must be sufficiently flexible and knowledgeable about the print and online production process.
Additional preferred skills/qualifications: Experience with Drupal and other CMS systems. Experience with Adobe Photoshop. Experience and interest in using social media as a key news gathering tool and for disseminating stories and creating a community.
