Away.com/Orbitz Worldwide seeks an Assistant/Associate Editor to support, and in some cases lead, various editorial products. Responsibilities will include ensuring editorial quality of various content, researching and writing various content, taking lead on social media efforts, and possibly assigning and managing freelance writers.
30% Research, write, and select an image for the site’s short but popular travel email product (that is often sponsored by an advertising client), plus coordinate with marketing and clients on this product. This email product is sent out 6 days a week, so consistency and attention to the deadline is key here.
· 20% Write and edit feature content, including writing and editing one-page top ten travel articles, plus editing longer top ten travel articles and longer travel service (advice) articles.
· 20% Write, edit, and acquire content for the blog, including first-person travel narratives, travel-related news, and posts that highlight site content writ large. Daily posts are encouraged.
· 10% Photo gallery and video work, including gathering images and writing captions for travel photo galleries, and working with senior editors to develop creative ways to bring travel videos to the site.
· 10% Social media work, including posting Away.com updates and other travel updates to facebook and twitter. Plus, coming up with new social media initiatives will be encouraged.
· 10% Miscellaneous (supporting contests, supporting PR efforts, etc.).
The following skills/experience are mandatory:
· B.A. in journalism, English, or related field
· Excellent verbal and written communications skills
· Excellent copy-editing skills
· Excellent attention to detail
· Excellent computer skills, including knowledge of MS Office
· Demonstrable decision-making skills
· Ability to work independently
The following skills/experience would set the applicant apart from his/her peers:
· Experience with/knowledge of online content management systems and HTML
· Prior travel-industry experience
· Existing network of travel writers
1-2 years editorial and administrative experience. 1-2 years online experience preferred.
