For all the folks outside of NYC that didn't major in journalism as an
undergrad and for those who completed their master's—here's a success
story.
I landed an associate editor job for a trade magazine in August. And
after reading these boards while I finished my MA in Writing, I had to
share.
I've worked as an EA and intern at both consumer (regional) and b2b
(national) magazines since graduating undergrad in sociology. I worked
three jobs while living in my parents' basement after graduation and
before making the move to Chicago over two years ago.
Now I have a great job where I write 3-4 features monthly on
everything from purses to music and do so with cool people and an
amazing boss. And I'm finally getting a steady stream of freelance
work too!
My point—You can find writing and editing jobs anywhere—you just
have to decide what your goals are and what is important to you. Is a
master's right for you? Only you know, but things I learned in grad
school comes up at least once a week at work.
For me, it was worth the time and money a thousand times over!
