Giving up my dream mag job to get A mag job? (Consumer vs trade mags)

I’ve been out of school for a year and interning at a well-known monthly for the past year. Trouble is, they’re not hiring. I’m about to have a second interview for a small trade magazine that covers a topic I’m not very interested in, but it would be a paycheck and benefits (much needed after a year of interning!).

If I get an offer for this job, I know financially I should take it… but I’m worried that in the future it might hurt my chances of eventually moving back into consumer mags.

Will taking a job at a trade mag seriously hurt my chances of getting a job at a better magazine in the future? Or would I be forced to write about mechanics forever?

Take the job if you need the money

Taking this position with a trade mag will not hurt your chances of landing the job you want in consumer magazines.
You may even find that taking this role will open new doors and introduce you to opportunities you had previously not considered.
If the alternative option is unemployment then definitely take the job if you are lucky enough to get an offer.

i’ve been in a similar situation (science/medical publishing is similar to trade publishing in this regard) and my perspective is that everyone needs to eat. if you are getting subsidized by parents or an SO or have substantial savings, then maybe you should hold out. on the other hand, if you’re not supported by anyone but yourself, then you might not have a lot of actual choice in this matter…ultimately you are the only one that knows your financial situation and the urgency of having a paycheck (otherwise known as the level of poverty you’re willing to put up with).

also one job at a trade magazine doesn’t doom you to “mechanics forever.” it may make it more difficult to accomplish your goals (depending on what your goals are), but don’t forget that you can always freelance.

I’m in the same boat

I’m in the same boat except I took the trade job right out of college (well August after a May graduation). I’ve been thinking about how the longer I stay there my chances of landing my dream entertainment gig slip further away—but it is experience but I’m afraid I’m going to get stuck business writing, etc.

trade mags

^ oh man, i am totally in the exact same position as you, as well. i’m so tired of my trade mags. i’d like to exchange e-mails as well, if that’s ok.
