I’m at the point where I’m about to graduate and I’m applying for multiple jobs. How do you balance the jobs you’re applying for when you hear back at different times from all of them, and you may hear back about one, and feel the pressure to commit or not, before you hear back from another one…?
Just curious how that balance goes. Thanks in advance.
quality and time
If you are applying for multiple jobs and what you only hear from them is “we’ll call you”. I think you have to order this job from top to bottom. Putting first the job that you think you deserve and deserves you. One that you can use more of your qualities and skills. And also will give you extra time for your another job. I would not wonder that many today are finding multiple jobs. Considering our economy, that is not the only thing people do just to survive some are even depending on
short term loans to use for their emergency expenses.
For me, and for a lot of us,
For me, and for a lot of us, the only “balancing” that goes on is balancing the anxiety in your head. It is RARE, RARE, RARE that you will end up with two equally good job offers from two magazines for which you would equally love to work—and if it does, more power to you, and don’t you dare complain about it! :)
However, given this economy, I’m sure you’re going to be applying to anything and everything, including jobs you’re not that jazzed about, and I assume what you’re worrying about is that your dream magazine will come calling when you’ve already accepted an offer from a lesser entity, right? It could happen. It has happened. But for so many of us, our dream publications are exactly the ones that are in hiring freezes right now, that are putting up listings and then not hiring, that are cutting salaries and benefits left and right—that may not matter to you now while you’re still in school, but loving your job gets harder when you’re really hating your life. You don’t have to take the first job you’re offered, but you shouldn’t hold out for what is 99% likely to be a pipe dream, even if you do think you’re perfect for the job.
Since we don’t know anything about you, about where you’re applying, or about your background, this has to be pretty generic, but the best practical career advice I can offer is to really really THINK about each job you’ve applied for and how badly you want them, and where you think you’d really be a great fit. You also have to think realistically about your chances on each application—that resume you emailed in response to a listing on the Conde Nast website should basically not even factor into your calculations as something you’re “waiting to hear back on” because it’s such a long shot. If every job you’ve applied for is one you’d be happy to have on its own merits, not just for the sake of having a job, it will make your decision easier.
