Did anyone else apply for the January-June fellowship with Southern Progress? I know the earliest for hearing back is next week, but I’ve already started biting my nails — I’m so nervous and impatient! Hoping there’s someone here who can relate. =)
Has anyone here done an internship/fellowship with SPC and know if it’s a good idea to send a follow-up e-mail to confirm they got your app? Their FAQ specifically says not to call, but I wasn’t sure if the same policy applied to e-mails. I’m assuming it does, considering the volume of applications, but I figured I’d ask to see if anyone had experience with the process.
Anyway, guess I’ll be sitting here, nervously flipping through my stack of Southern Livings until I hear back either way.

interview at SPC
Hey there! I applied for the SPC Six-Month Fellowship and received an email last week with an interview invitation too! I replied back with the only date I could interview (I’m still a student in Nashville) and have yet to hear back from Meg. I am just a bit worried that I haven’t received any interview info…so I started searching online for other applicants! I’m glad to hear that people are receiving emails and such at different times, but should I email Meg just in case? Should I just be patient and wait to hear from her? Help! :)

I talked to Meg, who coordinates the intern/fellowships, and I have three interviews. Two are one-hour interviews and one is a 30-minute interview.
We get our schedule packets tomorrow (Tuesday) or the day after tomorrow.

Regarding interviews
I did an internship at SPC, and you are only really required to be there for your interview times. My interview lengths varied, but I’d say they’re roughly 30 minutes each. It really depends on who’s interviewing you and everyone’s schedule.
When I was there, the current interns organized a potential intern dinner two nights out of that week. So if you were there say, Tuesday and Thursday (I’m making these up), you could go out to eat with some current interns and get “the real scoop” on working at SPC, Birmingham, etc. Personally, I’ve had good experiences at these dinners. I don’t currently work there, so I can’t say if they’re doing this or which days. But you should be able to get more info from the intern coordinator.
Advice?
Do you have any advice for the interviews? I know I should be familiar with the magazine, target audience, etc., but in your experience with SPC, do they ask a lot of questions about your past internships/jobs or throw any curveball questions at applicants? I don’t know anyone else who’s done an internship there before, so any advice or suggestions you have would be awesome!

i can relate! i applied as well and it seems like i’ve been waiting for YEARS. if it helps, i did email to confirm, because i applied a couple weeks early and was having email issues and it made me all nervous. i heard back last week saying that my materials were received but haven’t been reviewed and i would get a confirmation email “soon”. haven’t heard anything since…good luck!!!
