Purely out of curiosity, what are your editorial office hours like?
In the past, I’ve worked from about 8:30 - 5 or 10-6. Pretty standard hours. And once the offices closed, the offices closed.
And though my current hours are technically from 9 - 6, it would be absolutely frowned upon if I worked any less than 8:30 - 7 each day. I’ve found myself here at midnight. And I’ve heard of low-level staffers spending the night in their cubes.
Please tell me this isn’t normal!

I only know of one magazine where people work hours like that on a regular basis—it’s like a competition to see who can work the latest. I work at a medium-size national glossy and I usually work 9 to 5:30-6:30. When we’re getting close to our print date I might have to stay later or bring work home.

Our hours are 9:30 to 6 or 10-7, depending on the department. Some people are here on the earlier side, some people definitely always stay late. 10-hour days aren’t uncommon, but 12-hour days are more rare. And definitely the assistant editors and EAs tend to work 9 hour days, not longer!
