So, like the rest of the world, I was laid off not too long ago. I’ve been freelancing a bit and applying to jobs like mad but since the economy is what it is, nothing’s really come about yet. I’m running low on money and have a mortgage to pay and am totally stressed out. Also, I don’t live in a publishing town. At all.
So I’m thinking perhaps this is the time to pack up and move to a bigger city. Am I wasting my time waiting for opportunities where I am if really there are few in comparison to other places? But also, I realize that moving elsewhere would mean more competition for jobs as well.
I’m looking at LA. I’m just not sure I’d fit in in NY and it’s so expensive. I just can’t decide what to do next. Should I get a crap full time job here and try to freelance and still apply? Or shack up with the rents, save some money and move to LA when I get the chance. Either way, it’s pretty depressing. I just can’t decide what would be less depressing and the smartest way to go.
i agree with the above
i agree with the above comment, the internet is with a doubt growing into the most important medium of communication across the globe and its due to sites like this that ideas are spreading so quickly.

I'm with ya!
Thought I’d give you some support and say I’m with ya. I had to move back here from NY because my job also fell through. I am in the exact same boat, applying for so-called “crap full time” positions and debating whether or not to move in with my parents. It is SUPER depressing, but just know someone else is also going through it.
As for your situation, go with your gut. I feel you will only get hired for a job in LA if you move there. Suck up your integrity and get a shitty job…because you know it will be worth it in the end. Make some contacts in whatever city you move to…heck, take me with you!
Stay put
My advice is to stay put and try to take your freelancing to a new level. If you don’t already have your foot in the door with the New York media industry, you may starve to death before you get the opportunity. Even the biggest media organizations in this city expect their interns to work for free and unless you think you have a real shot at skipping that part, I would recommend staying put in a city where the cost of living is reasonable. If you can afford to take the plunge, New York is a great city and there are opportunities here for those who can stick it out long enough to reap the rewards of their perseverance.
Frankly, especially if
Frankly, especially if you’re stressed about money and have a mortgage to pay, I think you should take any job you can for the time being. Having income will give you peace of mind and time for rational thinking to consider what the next real step should be for you - and the funds to do it.
If you’re worried about future employers looking down on experience in another field, I don’t think many would be off-put by you taking a different sort of job in this horrible economy. In fact, it seems to be the responsible thing to do, and I’d think many would actually agree with your choice and understand where you are coming from. Plus, like you said, you can always work on some freelancing pursuits to keep you in the loop - in fact that might be a great way to get you on the radar of a publication you’re thinking of working for before you make a big move.
