I recently interviewed for a non-paid fall internship with a magazine at Hearst. Does anyone know if there are any perks like, a free metro card and/or small daily stipend?
I’ve interned elsewhere in NYC and received nothing. Does anyone know about Hearst?!

Agreed.
Big magazines = big egos. Get over yourselves.
We get that idea because
We get that idea because that’s what’s normal in SO many other fields. Damn magazines. Heaven forbid we want something more from our internship than the GIFT of even getting it.
Okay, rant over - I’ll go back to envying your job now, haha.
...
I’m not sure specifically, but why not ask them about a monthly metro pass, and/or other daily travel stipend? It does not hurt to ask, and more often than not, if the internship does not pay you per hour, the company is more than willing (in my experience) to pay for a daily travel stipend. This is because they are paying out way less money in travel money per day than they would if they paid you per hour.
This summer for example, I am interning with an SEO/Online Marketing/Web Design firm. It is non-paid, but after I received the internship offer, I asked them if they would be willing to reimburse my travel expenses. They had no problem with this, and pay me $10 a day for gas/travel. At the end of the week I have enough money to get back to work the next week. :-)
To the commenter before me: why wouldn’t a company want to at least help with travel? I think it’s the least thing a company should do for a student, especially if they aren’t paying them per hour or get full benefits of a part-time or full-time employee. If you want the intern to do the best possible job they can, travel expense reimbursement should be top priority so they can help around the office and get to work the next day!
No, there are no
No, there are no “perks”. I’m a little surprised by how many prospective interns have been asking me if we offer a travel stipend. Not sure where people may be getting this idea.
unnecessary attitude
I really don’t think this is a crazy question. Sheesh. Maybe she got that idea because similar companies offer these things. Conde Nast, for example, offers a $12 a day stipend for for-credit interns. I know that at magazine internships I’ve had in NYC, there have been plenty of unofficial perks- a Metrocard if I was running an errand, free Starbucks for myself if I was on a coffee run, plenty of free magazines and beauty products, and at least five expensed lunches when other eds were working through lunch. Can we all be a little nicer to the student who is forgoing the $8/hour campus job so she can make YOUR photocopies for free?
...
I really don’t understand why everyone is interpreting my comment as having serious attitude haha. I didn’t mean it like OMG STUPID INTERNS. I’m just saying that I never even thought about the idea of a travel stipend when I was interning, and I’m curious if someone somewhere said they were getting one and the idea spread around. I’d never been asked about it until interviewing for this semester, so it’s a little odd.
Obviously you get a free Metrocard or cabs while running errands for work. I never send my intern on coffee runs, but I’d definitely tell her to get herself something while out if I did. There are free magazines and beauty products and other random freebies. Lots of free food. Free books, sometimes CDs and DVDs. But no direct payment of any kind.
