Major Magazines versus Smaller Publications...Who Gets the Job?

I just graduated J-School. I couldn’t land an internship, so I’ve been working as a receptionist at my neighbor’s law firm. I have a ton of experience, including managing editor of my school paper, two campus magazines, the works. I also interned last summer at a regional lifestyle mag (I’m from L.A.), and an online beauty site. I asked my neighbor to look over my resume, and he said that I needed more major magazine experience to get that first EA job. The problem is, I’ve applied to just about every place for an internship, and just am not good enough :-(

So far, I’ve been on 12 internship interviews since July. Nobody has chosen me. I spend three hours on a 400-word cover letter, and all I get is a five-minute interview with an editor who doesn’t want me. I tell them I can get credit, so I doubt that’s the problem.

What should I do? My temp receptionist gig ends in two weeks, and I have nothing to do! I don’t want a small publication…I want to AIM BIG!

Here’s my two cents (I recently graduated and landed an EA job).
Get back in touch with your old bosses from the websites and lifestyle mags and let them know your dilemma and what you’re looking for - do they have contacts at big magazines they can recommend you for (for an internship)? Referrals can go a long way.

Also, e-mail HR about internships (as opposed to going directly to the editors). if HR likes you, that’s another referral, and HR can point you toward multiple opportunities at once. The important thing is to get an “in” at the big companies - Hearst, Conde, Time Inc. Even if you’re at a small(er) magazine there, you’ll be making connections that could allow you to move to elsewhere in the company.

Since you just graduated from J-school, it’s likely that you can still use career services from your school. If you’ve been getting called in for interviews, it sounds like your cover letters and resume look good. Maybe see if your school offers mock interviews and if they have interview advice for you?

I did a ton of big name internships while in school and freelanced during school as well - i honestly think it comes down to who you know and who can recommend you. i’ve found that even people with “iffy” edit tests are offered jobs if they come with glowing recommendations from a trusted source.
