Has anyone ever paid to submit their resume through quarterlife and had success with it?
I’ve come across a few things on Quarterlife that looked interesting (and very promising) in the past. Being cheap, I emailed the companies directly instead of paying to apply through the site. I’ve never gotten a response back. I don’t mind paying $5 if it leads to something, but that site comes off as really sketchy to me. So any thought, anecdotes, or opinions would be much appreciated. And yes, I’m referring to the times when looking at a masthead isn’t possible.
Thanks!

Thanks everyone for your
Thanks everyone for your opinions. Those were pretty much my thoughts, but I was having one of those “what if..” moments. Anytime I see a position that offers any pay, I just get a little desperate. Its nice to know I’m not the only one who thinks a fee to submit your resume is crazy. Also, nice to know that there are editors out there that feel the same way. Thanks again!
On the flip side...
I’ve never applied for an internship through the Web site, but I have had experience with Lauren sending candidates my way for spots I’ve posted at my magazine. Not once have I called one of those applicants in for an interview. They don’t include cover letters, they rarely fit the criteria I’m looking for and they often list completely unrelated goals/fields in their objective statements (which, IMHO, shouldn’t be on a resume to begin with) and work experience. I’m all for giving someone a first shot, but you’ve got to sell me on why you want to work in magazines.
Also, she’s sent me candidates for the completely wrong semester, which shows a lack of attention on her part.
You’re way better off looking for opportunities on the Ed Whispers page and any resources your school has.
Best of luck!!
i agree
I completely agree. I get resumes from Lauren from time to time, and they never fit the criteria. It’s pretty clear that she just blasts these to everyone who has ever listed an internship through QuarterLife. That said, if someone did fit what I was looking for, I wouldn’t hold it against them that I received the resume that way… so I guess it’s worth a shot? But I agree that you’re much better off just applying directly.
Thanks!
I love that an editor answered this question! I’m pretty sure she doesn’t even WANT the applicants to send cover letters - so what you end up with are students sending blanket applications to every available internship. Thanks so much for your insight on this!
I check the Quarterlife job
I check the Quarterlife job postings from time to time, but I rarely find anything useful. I can’t imagine many media companies would post jobs there and not elsewhere.
I had no idea that Quarterlife charges money to allow you to submit resumes. That seems really sketchy to me. Don’t pay to submit your resume, especially to a company that is exploiting recent graduates trying to get their first jobs in this bad economy. Use your money to buy business cards and start networking. Find another way to apply to those companies.
I’ve never used it, but
I’ve never used it, but I’ve heard from others that it is sketchy. First all, you should never have to pay to apply for a job. Secondly, if you did want to pay because you thought someone would get your application to the top of the pile, I can’t see how QuarterLife/InternQueen would help you get there. From what I gather, she’s basically the middle man - you send her your resume and she sends it to the contact at the mag/company/whatever you are applying to. She doesn’t vouch for you - she can’t, she doesn’t know you, so I don’t think you’d look better than other applicants.
As far as magazine internships go, I’ve never seen anything posted on her site for magazines that hasn’t been posted here - and more currently. Most of the QL listings are old.
Maybe some people have had success, but I’m betting its just as effective, if not moreso, to do the legwork yourself when applying for internships. Then, your life is in your hands and the initiative you took shows.
