Surrounding downtown are the neighborhoods of the South End, North End, West End, Bay Village, Beacon Hill, and Back Bay. The South End is the center of the city’s LGBT population and also populated by artists and young professionals. The North End retains an Italian flavor with its many Italian restaurants, though many of its Italian families have moved out, while young professionals have moved in.

There are some really great areas that are not technically in Boston but are right outside of it that are pretty cheap. Allston and Brighton are two that a lot of college kids from BU and BC live. The rent is cheap and you can usually get a good amount of space for our money. The downside is that the area is a little rundown and it has a lot of young college kids, but there are a lot of cheap restaurants and bars and it can be a lot of fun. There’s also Brookline which is another suburb of Boston. Its a little pricier than Allston or Brighton but the area is a lot nice and the apts are usually in better shape. There’s also amazing places to eat and shop in Brookline so thats a nice upside. Dorchester, Roxbury, Somerville, Charlestown, are also on the outskirts. They are more outside the city so i don’t know as much about the areas but they are also worth looking into because the rent there will be a lot cheaper than it would be in the city.
