It's hard.

It’s very hard to get on at Chicago magazine for a number of reasons. One, they aren’t hiring. They’re owned by the Tribune Company which filed for bankruptcy, and they’ve laid some people off recently. Two, once you get on, you stay on … forever, it seems. Three, the “entry-level” editor does have a masters as does nearly everyone on staff. That’s not to say it’s required, that’s just how it is now.

My internship experience was good - lots of fact-checking, some research and writing - and it definitely gave me an in for (paid) freelancing. The internship was paid, but I hear they won’t be paying interns come summer because of budget cuts.

Hope that helps!
