Washinton DC

I’m an NYC editor who’s thinking about relocating to the Washington DC area-what are the opportunities in journalism like in the area and what have people’s experience been like living there as opposed to NYC? Any advice or comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

No worries: You'll find something.

Not all the writing opportunities in DC are political!

Washingtonian is a great magazine that covers culture and fashion in addition to politics. There’s also Metromix, Washington Parent, Washington Life and DC Modern Luxury.

Or look into the style sections of local newspapers. And remember that Baltimore, which has its own publishing possibilities, is very close to DC. I’m sure you can find something you enjoy.

Check out associations and organizational publications

I disagree to some extent about the variety of choices out there. I’m an editor for an association magazine based in DC, and you’ll find that many organizations are based out of DC. Granted, these will be relatively niche areas, but the best places to look for the jobs at association mags are on the association’s website. Many of these associations have their own job posting boards, which is where you’ll find postings for their organization as well.

I would suggest searching for associations that might interest you (there is literally an association for practically everything you can think of—environment, animal, cosmetics, infrastructure, diseases, etc.) These jobs are great because they tend to be more stable than other journalism jobs and even pay better, it just takes some extra research outside of the regular job boards.

DC

I went to college in DC and pursued a lot of internships there…but if you don’t want to write about politics it’s pretty limited. But it’s a great city! There are some small mags and websites non govt related but you’ll just have to really search for them. If govt is your thing then you’ll have no problem - minus the current job situation of course :)

Be prepared to swim in a really, really small pool.

I went to college in DC and then moved to NY and freelanced for a year at different websites. I got a full-time gig in DC and moved back here in January. The pool of media is teeny, tiny here. It’s still a little bit shocking and I think about going back to NY ALL THE TIME.

I LOVE the city, but as far as opportunities, they are slim. You need campaign or “Hill” experience for every single job, it seems. And a lot of the writing jobs are with non-profits (so you need proven grant writing experience), politicians or newspapers. I would suggest that you search for a job here on MediaBistro or journalismjobs.com everyday for like two weeks. That should show you how different it is, as far as opportunities.
