Taking a job before knowing if you're going to get a better one

Of course, I’ve been applying to hundreds of jobs for months and haven’t heard one thing back. As of today, I heard back from one BIG book publishing company and a part-time position at a local paper.

I had a short phone interview with the book pub. company and the HR woman said she’d forward my resume to the hiring manager. I feel like I didn’t do good on the phone interview, but was happy to hear she’d forward my resume. And tomorrow, I have an interview at a local paper that would only be on Mondays and Tuesdays (part-time).

I know I’m jumping ahead of myself thinking I was already offered this part-time job when I haven’t even interviewed yet, but it scares me I might be offered a part-time position when I might be offered another GREAT opportunity that I would kill to take! I have no idea what to do if I am offered this part-time position. Any thoughts? Or anyone that was ever in this same situation? I don’t want to burn bridges if, say, I did get this PT job and THEN was offered the FT at the pub. co. I’m so confused!

Your concern is admirable

Your concern is admirable and logical, but you do have to look out for yourself here. No one who hires you for a part-time job with no benefits will be surprised if you leave it for a full-time job with benefits.

Just make sure that if you DO get offered the P/T job, you take it in completely good faith and ROCK it. Don’t go in with an attitude that you’ll be out the door in a minute if something better comes along—of course that’s true, but you’d be amazed how easily editors pick up on it. The book publishing thing sounds WAY less than certain (you don’t actually even know if HR did decide to forward your resume, you’re just taking her word for it and assuming it wasn’t a polite brushoff) so put it out of your mind and move on with the rest of your search for now.

If you’re offered the PT job, take it. The way this economy is, you can’t really turn down paying work without a sure thing to do instead. And this book company sounds possible but not probable at this point. If you take the PT job and then you later get offered the book job, then you just quit the PT job. Is that ideal? Of course not. But you have to look out for yourself. As long as you work hard while you are there and are a good conscientious employee and are respectful, and give them enough notice when you quit, then you’ll be fine. If it were a FT job, then that’s a little tougher, but who would want you to turn down a FT salary for PT? Especially if the PT doesn’t have benefits. Yes, this is a small world and you don’t want to burn bridges … but you also have to do what’s right for you, and as long as you do it with respect and are a good employee where-ever you are for as long as you’re there, it’ll all be fine.

I've been in the same position

About a month ago, I was in very much the same position.

I had interviewed with a small university communications department for a position as executive editor of a start-up alumni mag. Loads of responsibility plus management experience at only 21! My initial phone interviews went well, and they immediately invited me to visit campus - they’d pay for my flight, my food, my hotel, cabs, etc. etc. I committed to the visit (even though it was in a not-so-hot locale), and looked very forward to the final interview. I assume I was one of two or three finalists, based on mentors I consulted who have worked at alumni mags.

After really amping myself up about the job, I got a call from a BIG BIG BIG name magazine I had interviewed with for a post-grad, paid, full-time internship. After submitting edit tests and doing phone interviews, they offered me the job. Great news, especially in a crappy economy, but I had to make a big decision: Go with the okay-paying internship at a very prestigious title, or bank on getting the big gig at the little mag.

After consulting again with professors, editors and mentors, I made the decision to cancel my interview at the alumni mag and instead took the internship. I was thinking like you: Duh I could take the internship,and then rescind my commitment after I got the other offer. Not the case, apparently. It’s just bad etiquette.

In my situation, both choices would have been full-time, paying positions, which doesn’t seem to be your case… Weigh your options heavily, consult with advisers and mentors, and think about it some more. But make sure you don’t jump the gun; just because you’ve interviewed with the big publisher and made it through round 1 doesn’t mean you’ve got it in the bag. Big publishers = even bigger competition.

If I were you, I would continue interviewing with both companies until you get an offer from one, and then make your decision. Don’t discount the little guy - even local newspapers can make a big impact on your future career. Journalists have a tendency to talk. And bad news travels fast.

Good luck in all your endeavors! I hope you get the big job if that’s what you’re vying for.
