Sick of looking for a job! Thoughts from London & Advice needed

Hi everyone,

I know most people who comment on here are from the US but I just have to vent about the situation that has fallen on our year of media graduates.

I’m studying magazine journalism at the moment, and while I am grateful to be on the course, I cannot help feeling a sense of gloom.

Ideally, I would like to be on a magazine’s website, learning about online stuff but there are no online magazine jobs either from how I have been looking. I’ve been talking to people, checking online sites like gorkanaPR & guardian jobs but again, it’s one of those ‘close but no cigar’ types.

I even contacted a Personnel manager at Conde Nast in London, trying to get her to meet me, but instead she settled on email. She was friendly but firm about doing more ”work experience” and I just felt like screaming because it is like what the F does she think I am doing the whole time? I also contacted the NatMags Personnel manager but haven’t heard back.

I know that I may have to do another placement in October whilst looking for a permanent position. I do want to get an entry level job on the online side or print side in either B2B magazines or Consumers but another nagging feeling I am having at the moment is I do want to be an entrepreneur in publishing. I am passionate about online magazines and I do want to start my own one. In an ideal world, I would like to have an entry level job and then start my own websites.

I just feel frustrated because I am working really hard to try and secure a job (like you all are I am sure) but I know things may not work out how I like.

I still have to do my MA project so there is still time to find a job but it is very difficult. Even finding a media job in other rural parts of England is proving extremely hard too.

Any thoughts, advice, opinions are welcome. Hope to get some debate on this board.

i know that many people on this board have a pretty narrow part of the magazine market that they are interested in, but i think that most of those popular areas are pretty much screwed right now.

if people are looking for entry level positions that are perhaps less lucrative and have less of a direct line to where they want to go (but will still be a paying job), i highly recommend science, health, and boring b2b publications. i currently work at a medical/science journal and while i was initially looking to start moving toward my goal of a political publication this year, the market is just not cooperating. so i’m planning on getting a different science/medical publishing position in a city that’s more conducive to making connections than the one i’m in now. so just taking a two second look at craigslist, springer (the biggest book publisher and second biggest journal publisher after elsevier) is hiring 2 EA’s in NY and the listing says “perfect for college grads.”

i know that science is really boring and not where most folks want to be eventually, but it is a job in publishing and imo better than temping or waiting tables. similarly a lot of boring business magazines for specific industries are hiring well (lots of that kind of stuff in chicago, if anyone is interested in that city). so if you’re willing to not work in your first field of choice, science and business publishing is still going strong and if my experience is any indication, the workload is really quite small and gives lots of time for freelancing and continuing to pursue other opportunities. in the meantime, it does put food on the table.

There are a lot of those sciency/medical B2B jobs in London as well but I have a few questions abt them if you don’t mind answering?

1) How are the people you work with like?

2) You say it leaves some time to freelance, how much freelancing do you think you could be doing whilst doing the boring B2B job?

I’m deffo not a snob about doing B2B journalism. I just want to get a job for 2 years so I can pay off my debt and then start my websites.

hi! sure i can answer your questions

- the people i work with are very nice. since i work in an office that only has one journal and one book (it’s the publications office of one medium-sized medical society) the office is very small. currently everyone in my office is under 30 with one middle aged manager who commutes to our office every other week from another city. it’s quite laid back. i don’t know how common this level of informality is overall - certainly it would be different at a huge company like elsevier or springer. i would expect that since most science/medical publishers are non-profit institutions, you generally won’t find the overly competitive types working there.

- as for the time situation, in over a year of working at my current job, i have never (never!) had to come in early, work overtime, or take my work home with me. so naturally this leaves a lot of physical energy, mental space, and actual time for doing my own thing to prepare for getting a position closer to my desired field. i’ve been able to develop my blog ( http://open.salon.com/blog/montcalm ) while working at my current job. and this is between me and all of you, but i also do about 50% of the research for my blog at work because my workload is so light :P

there are other perks to working in this area as well. the benefits and pay are generally great, they send you to easy-going conventions every once in a while (in the past year i’ve been sent to vancouver, montreal, and a couple of very exciting trips to washington, dc), and there’s generally pretty good job security. unfortunately the content is boring and the job is boring, but the way i see it, you have to start somewhere.

(also, i forgot to mention this in my original post, but there are plenty of jobs with other academic publishers in the humanities and social sciences, often tied to universities. unfortunately the humanities are not as well-funded as the sciences here in the US (it may be different in UK) so some of the academic publishers are experiencing mild hiring freezes. at least a position with humanities journals often offers a more interesting topic than industry or technical/science/medical journals and magazines.)

**Are the people quite friendly and are the people you work with passionate about sciency/medical publishing or is it more a means to an end?

**If you don’t mind me asking, what’s your magazine goal? Consumer? Trade? My aim is just to get an EA job that pays so I can pay off my overdraft and work on my websites in my spare time so I think I could do the medical B2B publishing.

**I checked out your blog and it looks good. I especially like your coverage on swine flu as well. Are you into political writing?

I am definitely seeing more B2B medical pub jobs at the minute so I am trying to focus on applying for them.

- the people i work with are very friendly. i think most of them are doing science publishing as a “job” (like me) as opposed to a career. although my former boss who left for another science publisher started out doing it as a “job” but it’s now turned into a career.

- my goal is progressive political publications. however, i am clearly quite far from that goal at the moment :P if all you need is free time and income, then this the field for you. if you’re not sure how intense your workload might be at a particular position, just ask at the interview what the office environment is like.

- thanks again for checking my blog! yes i am pretty much only interested in politics and cultural politics. i’m actually not interested in being a career writer or journalist and am more interested in going down the editorial track, but you gotta write to edit so that’s what i’m trying to do.

hey again,

yes i am almost exclusively interested in political editing. i can and do write, but it’s not what i’m most passionate about and it’s not where my best capabilities lie (imo). my favorite publications are mother jones, the nation, salon, christian science monitor, and stuff of that ilk. i also like more critical publications like dissent magazine, alternet.org, and verso books.

as for what i’m doing to get involved it’s something of an indirect route. the problem is that i didn’t major in journalism (wasn’t offered at my college), remained in my college town (for several reasons) after graduation, and took a detour into science publishing after college. so i’m really isolated from where most things are happening in political publishing. to stay current i keep my blog, stay up to date on many publications and the progressive blogosphere, app to prestigious paid post-college internships (apped to mother jones’ internship this spring but didn’t get it), and i’m planning a move to a better city for progressive publishing (san francisco). i’m quite far from where i want to be and am not at the stage of pitching for freelance gigs just yet. at the moment i am trying to flesh out my blog a little more and develop a certain body of work that i can point people to. i’m hoping that a move to a city with a strong progressive publishing tradition will help me make connections and become more involved in that community. i’m terrible at “networking” (it all seems so contrived) but there’s nothing like being in a good milieu for meeting people doing interesting things and who might just give you a job ;)

as for corporate freelancing, i don’t know anything about it. might be a relevant question for a new thread.

I know exactly how you are

I know exactly how you are feeling. The economy has obviously gone to the shits in the US and we ALL know how you’re feeling.

I am graduating from college in 2 days with hundreds upon hundreds of applications sent out EVERYWHERE for an entry-level job (which I am completely starting to realize I don’t want to sit behind a cubicle my whole life, but oh well. Too late.)

I am aware I don’t have 18 internships under my belt like many other people who can afford to do internships every semester, unlike me do. I just couldn’t afford to commute an hour to the city from my college knowing it’s going to cost hundreds of dollars and I’m doing an unpaid internship. I definitely understand many people don’t have enough experience and that’s why they’re not being offered jobs, but how are we ever supposed to GET experience if we’re not GIVEN any?

This job market is obviously weighing heavily on all of us and I am feeling very discouraged (and I JUST graduated!) but I am trying HARD to stay interested in this field by writing for free for a website. It seems like every job I find is unpaid and I am trying to get the experience, but I need SOME sort of income… re-paying loans is rolling around the corner in just six months!

I hope I’m not the only one who feels like this!

Do you know what kind of magazine journalism you want to do? Fashion? Music? or B2B/trade side? I think you have touched on such a good point when you say that the economy has gone to ‘shit’ as you put it. It’s bloody awful, to be quite honest.

I used to always see vacancies last year around Jan/Feb for journalism jobs in London/England/Scotland etc but now, you can go for weeks and weeks and not even see one ‘editorial assistant’ position.

But honestly what are the alternatives for us? You cannot work for free forever. I also find it interesting that in the US, you lot seem to be more placements and they seem to be longer and from what I have heard, they still don’t pay you. These companies are unscrupulous and should be punished for employing labour so freely.

As glamorous as Conde Nast looks, it is no substitute for food in my belly and being able to buy tea and milk!! I wish these companies would understand that.

I recently met with an ex-journalist who started her own PR firm. She told me point blank that she does not think the economy will recover for journalism jobs anyway until at least 2012, when London has the Olympics. Very scary. And I believe her - she has worked for some of the biggest magazine companies in the world.

I know all over the world the economy is awful which just makes me get annoyed at all the people who say we should continue working for free and networking — how can you continue to do that if you cannot pay your rent?

It’s ridiculous.
