I’m in a tricky situation — I graduated last May and shortly after headed overseas to teach English and travel. Now I’m back, but I’ve received a fellowship so in about eight months I’ll be heading abroad again for a year. In the meantime I need some employment and would like some more editorial experience.
But no one would hire me knowing I won’t be around for long, and there aren’t enough 6th-month paid internships to go around.
Any advice about temping? I don’t even know where to start. Any suggestions about where I should move? I feel NYC is a major (as in expensive) commitment to make for a short-term stay. Should I just get a gig in the service industry to pay the bills and look for yet another unpaid internship?

Try Atrium . . .
Contact Atrium staffing. They’re more professional than most of the temp agencies in new york.
Career Blazers are biased!
DON’T GO TO CAREER BLAZERS! They never had any work for me, and I tested 90+ on all of their tests. Also, if you are a minority, they don’t treat you with much respect. When I first signed up there, I notice I was the only minority there (only 2 other Caucasians were there signing up) There aren’t any minority recruiters either. So beware of them. Try Temporary Staffing by Suzanne (no test! and fast assignments in a variety of fields) or Merlin Temps.
Hi, Could you expand on
Hi,
Could you expand on your experience a bit please? How awful of them not to be helpful to you.
I’m a black girl and I definitely think you can tell when a recruitment agency wants to help you or not.
Here is my experience with Career Blazers
Hi, sorry it took me so long to reply,
Here’s my experience with Career Blazers. I called and spoke with a recruiter, who I won’t mention her name. You could tell over the phone she was very old. I told her I was in the market for temporary work. And she told me to send my resume to her in an e-mail. I specifically told here I was looking for temporary work for the summer. She scheduled an appointment with me. So I show up, my appointment was for 10 a.m. She kept me waiting for a half an hour. She finally came out and called my name. While I was waiting, there were only two other white women there. So my recruiter gives me this long stare as if she was expecting someone else. So she sits me down and asks me what am I looking for. I told her I would like some temporary assignments. She then tells me “Well, I can’t help you dear, I only deal with direct placement” WHAT? I told her I sent her my e-mail saying that I was only looking for temp work. Conveniently, her phone rings and she is on the call, in front of me for 20 minutes straight! She then hangs up and tells me I need to see someone else, and then talks down to me, stating that for future reference I should always ask what recruiter does what and what the company I interview for does, which has nothing to do with what was going on at that moment. She sends me to the temp division, and I over hear her telling the secretary she would never place me, because I didn’t appear to be smart. I have a Bachelor’s and graduated with a 3.5 average. I’m no Einstein, but you could tell she thought I wasn’t that smart because I wasn’t that white, if you know what I mean. So someone from the temp division comes out for me, and tells me that they can just e-mail me the test to take at home, and interviews me about my previous work history. I never got that e-mail! After that, I just left. Oh, I forgot to mention that one of the white women there got to meet the president of career blazers. I notice this while waiting for my recruiter to finish her 20-minute call. A few weeks later I signed with Atrium Staffing, which was more helpful and professional than Career Blazers. Hopes this helps you! But beware that most temp agencies (not all) have ulterior motives to please their clients more than you, the employee.

sounds like your best bet might be to either work with a temp agency or try to get a part time internship and freelance or work the rest of the time. and you’re right, moving to new york for 6 months is probably not the best use of what i’m assuming are limited resources.
Quick question...
About temp work in general…is it good or bad to take on a temporary EA position? I interviewed for a job that was for a certain number of hours and paid an hourly wage and offered no benefits, but would certainly be a way of getting my foot in the door. If I get offered the position, would you guys generally be for or against this? With the economy the way it is and no other full-time, salaried EA jobs in sight I feel like it’s a great option, but since the pay is so little and it’s only temporary, I’m really torn. Thanks!
I mean, its a start—and if
I mean, its a start—and if no other options are presenting themselves, I would certainly take it. You need a job anyway, you might as well work in your chosen field, even if it’s only temporary. Just make sure that you mention when you interview elsewhere later that it was a contract position that was only intended to last six months or whatever, so they don’t wonder why you didn’t stay a year at your first job or whatever.
maybe look for short term
maybe look for short term freelance work, or try to get in with a temp agency? (career blazers is pretty good)
