Wow a lot of animosity from

Wow a lot of animosity from the fashion closet - good thing I wouldn’t be over in that department I suppose, if I get the job. I’ve talked to a few other people I’ve known who have had friends of friends, etc, who have worked as an edit intern - I’ve heard a lot of good things along with the bad so I bet it just depends on your personality and attitude. Also, I don’t think anyone is ever “promised” they’ll get clips - its be proactive or die out there, haha.

I guess we’ll see what happens! Anyone have firsthand experience as an edit intern?

my experience

I interned at Good Housekeeping in the editorial department and had a great experience. It’s what you make of it… some days there won’t be much for you to work on, but if you seek it out, you’ll find work. You just have to be proactive. I got a few online clips from my internship and worked on some cool projects. I don’t understand why people have problems with the fashion department, either. The fashion interns that were there my semester had a great time, played music all day and helped with photo shoots.

Ditto. I also interned in the editorial department and had an amazing experience. Yeah, there will be downtime, as there usually is at most internships. It really is about being proactive with the editors and making the most out of your assignments. I thought everyone I worked with was super sweet. As far as the fashion department, my desk was right in front of the filing drawers they used, and I always felt like I saw someone new, sooo…

Yay - so good to hear! So glad you both had good experiences and thanks for sharing.

My really good friend

My friend interned there a little bit ago in the edit department as a senior. She had done 6 internships, and said it was a waste of her time. She didn’t feel valued during her experience and left there vowing to never work there again. Oh and she didn’t get any clips either, as promised. So if you’re looking for a big name, and that’s it….good luck!

Do NOT intern in GH's fashion dept.

Aside from never leaving the closet and getting ZERO respect, the people that oversee you won’t even try to help you in the future any way, shape or form. Deadlines for shipping products back are not only unrealistic, they are laughable. The fashion assistant also has you do her dirty work while she runs around trying to impress her supieriors that probably treat their dogs better. When I was there interns quit and I couldn’t leave fast enough. NOT recommended! I heard the edit interns had it okay though. Out of seven internships this is the only one I had an issue with. People that worked there even admitted they only stayed because they couldn’t get hired anywhere better.

hahaha…that pretty much

hahaha…that pretty much summarizes it. i had to deal w/ ridiculous stuff like not being allowed to EAT on photo shoots while the entire staff was eating, and the food was right there.

i interned in the fashion

i interned in the fashion dept…i pretty much nicknamed my internship “the devil wears ann taylor.” they acted like they’re at vogue or something even though they were working w/ soccer mom brands. from everything i hear, it was a pretty standard fashion closet internship — sending and receiving samples, organizing, a little working on photo shoots, etc., so if you want closet experience, it’s a good fit. and some of the people are nice. but in general you’re going to have a lot of bitch work/responsibility without being treated like a staff member.

oh, i heard from the

oh, i heard from the editorial interns that their experience was pretty good though. and the view out of the fashion closet’s window is unbelievable. too bad you’re not allowed to sit in the cafeteria while eating lunch (have to bring the food upstairs), play soft music while working, or be present during run-thrus with the EIC (who is a really nice lady). but that’s just when i was there…

Thanks for your insight -

Thanks for your insight - I’m interviewing for a position in editorial, actually, so I won’t have any Ann Taylor nightmares (I hope, haha). Did you hear anything else from the edit interns?

they told me they did

they told me they did fact-checking, research, and wrote short pieces — seemed like a good experience. i don’t know much beyond that. they sit pretty close to the senior editor staff, so there’s not much room for goofing off/facebook/etc. i was definitely jealous that they got to sit at their computers, while i ran around photocopying entire binders of information and spent hours on the floor filing look books. i’m actually exaggerating a bit, my experience wasn’t bad, but definitely different from editorial :)
