Interviews?

I don’t live in New York, but am hoping to spend next summer (2010, don’t worry, I didn’t just procrastinate on planning THIS summer) in NYC. How much of a disadvantage am I looking at, since I don’t already live in the area?
And as far as interviews, what kind of leeway do you have in planning one, with both larger and smaller magazines? Would I be able to schedule multiple interviews in a few days, and save money on plane fare and hotel stay?
Thanks everyone!

I’m from North Carolina

I’m from North Carolina and just 2 weeks ago spent my spring break in NYC partaking in interviews in between shopping. It’s a lot of works those months leading up to your trip. I started sending out e-mails, resumes, and cover letters back in January. I’ve applied for most internships posted here but have only heard back from few, and am always scared of being the pestering one who calls or checks in too freequently.

As far as competitiveness, I would think a magazine would WANT someone from out of state who could give fresh ideas.

I know what its like to

I know what its like to constantly be researching jobs and interviewing. My advice would be to always work on your pitch - make it clear and concise so that when an interviewer asks you to “tell us about yourself” you can immediately give them your story. If you already have it down, then I suggest working your network (alumni, professional, personal) for job leads. “The Hunt” is a numbers game and eventually you will find the right fit. Stay positive and keep up with activities that you enjoy. I hope this helps.
