Columbia/NYU Summer Publishing courses

Has anyone ever done the Columbia Publishing Course or NYU’s Summer Publishing Institute or know anyone who has? Are they worth it? Will they really get you a job at the big pub houses like I’ve heard? Any other thoughts or experiences with either?

Just finished Columbia

I just finished the Columbia Publishing Course and it was a fantastic experience. But it’s definitely more book based (that was what I was looking for). It’s three weeks of books, two weeks of magazines, and one week of digital media. Weeks 3 and 5 are intensive workshops - book and then magazine/website. I don’t know any more about NYU than I did when I applied there, so I don’t know if they have comparable workshops, but I got a lot of good experience from that.

I picked Columbia over NYU because I called both upon acceptance and was much more impressed with the answers I got from Columbia about the program and job statistics.

All that said, I don’t have a job yet. This year is crazy economy-wise, though, especially in publishing, so it’s hard to tell what to think of this. I certainly have much more of an “in” than I did before - the program leader is ridiculously connected and very accessible.

Which one is better?

Hi! I got accepted to both the NYU and the Columbia program. I really want to go into magazine publishing and from what I read the NYU course places much more emphasis on magazine publishing than the Columbia one. I really don’t know what to do! For the NYU continuing

For the NYU continuing studies to obtain a certificate, do you have to actually BE an NYU student? I’m kind of confused because on the website I don’t see anything about admission to get a certificate… unless they just let anyone register for it…

I did the NYU program and I

I did the NYU program and I had a friend who went to the Columbia program. While both programs are half book/half magazine, my friend told me she felt that the Columbia program placed more emphasis on book publishing. For me, the NYU program was a great networking opportunity because new editors from different magazines came to speak to us every day. A lot of them gave informational interviews to students that contacted them. Neither of these programs GUARANTEE you a job but I do think it gives you an edge. I heard some students have gotten jobs and some haven’t. I guess it’s really what you do with the resources they give you.
