They’re offering writing positions - it’s just for clips though, no pay. 1 article a week. Is it worth it to do this if you’re graduating in May and it doesn’t seem like you’ll be landing a job soon at all? I have clips from my campus newspaper but only one internship under my belt, so I didn’t know if it was worth it to add this to my portfolio. But the website looks nice and I like how it caters to women… Any thoughts?

Congrats!
Congrats! I’ll be writing for Travel and Women’s Safety. I’m pretty excited and the new Editor-at-Large seems like she really wants to get ChickSpeak noticed and out there more than it has been in the past, which is great because even though it’s kind of small now, maybe it’ll be bigger soon :) Where are you located? She told me writers are basically from everywhere.
Agreed
It really seems like it’s an up-and-coming publication. I’m trying to promote it the best I can so far. It has some seriously good articles already. I’m in PA right now for school. What about you?
Twigie2
did you get it?
Hey did you end up getting one of the writing positions?
Twigie2
I did get it, actually. I
I did get it, actually. I had an interview a few days ago and just found out. It seems like a really great opportunity, and I really don’t have half as much experience as other college graduates do so I’m definitely taking the offer. Did you have an interview? The editor-at-large was so incredibly nice.
me too!
I’ll be writing for the site too! I love the website so far, and it seems like it will be a good experience. What sections are you writing for? I’ll be doing Beauty/Style and College Life.

Yeah, I emailed the editor
Yeah, I emailed the editor yesterday and got a response yesterday, so I have an interview set up. I just wanted some advice. Thanks everyone!
Sure
I think it looks like a great website. Go for it, the extra writing and exposure can’t hurt in this economy.
Think about it a little
I would try and find out more about the company and the site before you say yes. It looks like it’s a small start up and probably doesn’t have a lot of staff…the angle of being a site for women isn’t exactly fresh either, so whether or not this will get big, lead to a paying job, or translate as good experience may be kind of iffy. But, I could be wrong, look into it more.
I’m just really against taking non-paying writing jobs no matter how junior you are - and especially if the site is looking to just aggregate content to drive clicks (and hence more ad dollars). I almost feel like your time would be better spent pitching and reaching out to established publications (both print and online). One GREAT clip from a respected mag or site may prove a lot more valuable than a bunch from a no-name site that is little more than a blog you could just produce on your own (which is kind of what chickspeak.com looks like to me - one person’s blog grown a little bit). In fact, I would say it looks more proactive to start and upkeep your own blog. I mean, there’s your web skills - you’re doing it yourself!

Don't waste your time
I agree with the poster above — there’s no reason to donate your time and writing to this rinky-dink operation when you can create an amazingly rich personal blog on your own terms. And it’s not just a matter of pay — it doesn’t seem like ChickSpeak has the means to offer you any professional development whatsoever, which is absolutely critical at the entry level. For example, a “real” editor would tell her writers that they have to interview outside sources (preferably more than one) when they’re discussing anything other their personal lives. A “real” editor would catch cringe-worthy typos like “spring ware” (from a recent fashion story). And who exactly is reading this site? A lot of you Ed girls are right in its target audience — ever heard of it before? Do you find the material compelling? (No and no, I’d wager.) As a hiring/assigning editor, I’d quickly gloss over these silly, amateur-hour clips and ask for something more substantive.
I kind of disagree
And I think that all experience is good experience. Even if it’s for no pay, I see no shame in gaining clips at a not-so-well known publication or website. During my Sophomore year of college, I wrote for 1 not-so-well-known women’s site and another that had larger readership, both for no pay, and I think those experiences are partly what helped me get to where I am today. Especially if the only clips you have are from your college paper and you think you’d have the time to devote to writing an article or so a week, I say go for it…the more clips the merrier.
It’s my personal belief
It’s my personal belief that all experience is good experience in this industry. I have a friend who works at an insurance company doing desktop publishing during the day, and spends her time writing for websites (similar to ChickSpeak) for next to nothing during on her off time. It keeps her skills sharp and allows her to diversify her portfolio. I would take the job if you get it, especially if your background is primarily in newspapers. And web experience is looking really amazing right now.
