Where Have All The Paid Interships Gone?

I understand we’re in a recession which means even harder times for magazine heads during a media recession but I really wanted to land a paid internship this summer. I’ve been interning non-stop since my freshman year in anticipation of all the wonderful paid opportunities come junior year but they all seem to be disappearing. I applied for ASME but they haven’t notified anyone yet, probably due to the fact magazines are pulling out on their committment to pay the chosen interns, and now Conde Nast will only give college credit for fulltime positions.

I’m not from the city and have been completing unpaid internships for the past few years so if I don’t get a paid internship this summer my parents won’t foot the bill, even if I do plan to get a part-time job (which are scarce!). Plus, I must intern at a “news organization” i.e. magazine or newspaper in order to fufill my graduation requirement.

Does anyone know of any paid internship programs outside of Conde and ASME?

Please do advise.
