Portfolio

Hey everyone!

I’m still pretty new to the whole internship thing, I’m basically just getting started. I have a ton of clips though from various freelance jobs and college-related publications, and I was wondering how to actually put together a portfolio.

Some people said you can just use a 3ring binder but I’d rather not. what does everyone use now?

Also, how do you put the clips into it? Do you cut them out and type up what publication they are from? or am completely wrong here haha.

thanks for all the GREAT advice so far!

Thanks for such a great post

Thanks for such a great post and the review, I am totally impressed! Keep stuff like this coming.

I've known people to do both..

..But it seems like leaving your clips behind is sort of old school. Usually in the thank you e-mail you can just attach the clips that they seemed interested in/want you to leave them with. You know?

Either way, I think you’re fine. I’ve never, ever had someone ask to keep a clip of mine, even though I do have multiple copies of everything in my portfolio. THEY WILL WANT TO KEEP YOUR RESUME THOUGH SO ALWAYS PRINT OUT A BUNCH!

Awesome

Ok thanks a lot! I got a leather portfolio today and it’s not too obnoxious or anything. I’m copying you hope you don’t mind!

Aw, I don’t mind!! :)

Aw, I don’t mind!! :)

Good job having a lot of clips!

Please don’t do the 3-ring binder! It’s tacky. Instead, I bought a really nice leather portfolio (prepare to dish out some cash for a nice one), and seriously EVERY time I bring it to an interview they say, “Wow.. this is a really nice portfolio!”

For the actual clips, if you can, try to get the PDF versions of the page from InDesign or Quark and shrink it down to an 11x7 normal size paper. Print it out in color and it looks so much cleaner than newsprint!! But I ALWAYS put just a plain text version behind the layout version in case they want to read it and the text might be too small for them. A lot of interviews I’ve had they want to read something then and there and it’s easier to read in the plain text format.

If not able to do PDFs, I’ve seen people do it a few different ways. Sometimes they use a Xerox machine to scan in their clip from the newspaper and the machine can shrink it down to size and then they print it out. Or, the obvious, is to literally cut out your articles and display them in your portfolio. I have one piece that’s an entire pullout section from a newspaper so I just folded the whole thing and put it in there.

For magazines, usually they are easy to fit in the mag since they are relatively close to normal page size. Just nicely clip out the pages of the magazine you’ve written for and you’re done!

No need to type anything out. You can explain your clips as you go, and most pages say what publication it is on the top or bottom of a page.

One last thing: If there is more than one article on a page, make your byline stand out so they don’t have to search for it. I’ve highlighted mine in some cases, but do whatever you like best.

Awesome

Wow thank you so much that is great advice. Do you have people request to keep your portfolio or mail it out? My friend suggested having a couple cheaper versions that I won’t mind getting back. Does that sound right?

Yeah, I personally buy a new

Yeah, I personally buy a new portfolio every time I go on an interview. They have these great ones at Staples for like, 3 bucks each. They have plastic sleeves and room for 12-24 pages. I like to leave my interviewer with something, so I find that buying the cheap ones is the best way to do that rather than lugging a big expensive portfolio around and not letting the interviewer keep it.

Really, though, I think it’s personal preference.

What about....

Is there harm in doing both? Like having a nice leather portfolio, but also bringing a cheaper spare to just say “If you’d like to keep my work…”
