What happened to InStyle Magazine?

I am a big fan of InStyle Magazine since years and this month I open it,

and I almost think I am going through the supermarket special offers flyer..

where are all the HIGH CLASS ADS? where is Luis Vuitton, Gucci and Prada? Where are the perfume & make up ads?

Is that really all about the economy?!?

I found ads in there that would have never made it in, only a half year ago.. tooth paste, socks etc.

Also I recognized the editor in chief is now a man.

Not that its a bad thing but InStyle IS NOT MENS HEALTH.

The point of this post is the question:

Does anybody know what is going on at InStyle at the moment and: Is my favorite Magazine going down.. I hope not!

InStyle's EIC

Ariel Foxman took over for Charla Lawhon at IS and his first official issue was December 2008. Charla oversees the entire IS group but does NOT edit the magazine anylonger. NOTE: At TIME INC. John Huey hasthe Editor-in-Cheif title at all magazines but he works in coorporate. The head editor (called Editor-in-Chief at other mags.) has the title of MANAGING EDITOR at Time Inc- currently Ariel Foxman, a male.

I’m not sure....

I’m not sure but I think that Wendy Wilson may be a contact person. Her email address is wwilson@essence.com. I saw her name and email address to a job posting on a website in 2008 so she may still be the contact person now. Good luck!

Clarification...

Okay people, let’s simmer down.

As for the ad pages, yes, InStyle has a smaller January issue, which is typical, and the luxury ads have indeed fallen off a bit, but that’s also typical of the luxury ad business for all magazines, especiall in January after all the luxury ads were printed in December and people have no more money to spend after the holidays.

Also, Charla Lawhon is the Editor of the InStyle Group now, and yes, Ariel Foxman (a man) is indeed the top editor. He’s been at InStyle before, and then left, and recently came back to head the magazine (I think). Charla’s job now is to oversee all of the magazines and supplements under the InStyle brand. She’s more of a brand manager/editorial director now.

As for the content, InStyle has always been light on the editorial, in my opinion, just as most fashion mags have. But, they recently implemented a redesign in November (I think, with the Rihanna issue), so more editorial has been cut due to the reduction in ad pages. When you cut ads, and you’re a fashion magazine, editorial gets cut first before the fashion pages.

Just a heads up. (And no, I don’t work at InStyle…i’m just an insider. :>)

...

1. Could you be anymore sexist? Imagine if someone pegged the decline of a magazine on a woman.

2. Ads not adds. Advertisements not Addvertisements.

3. You mean luxury ads? Try Elle, Vogue and Harper’s.

4. InStyle has never been anything more than a glamorized magalog. It’s always been about the amount of product you can smash onto a page and multiply that by the number of smudges and lipstick colors in a sidebar. Why isn’t there more editorial you ask? Look at that Heidi Klum fluff profile/interview in the December (I think) issue.

I agree

I agree with everything. I wish InStyle had more editorial as well.

No Need to Panic

I love InStyle magazine as well. Most magazines during January tend to have less ads. The editor in chief is still Charla Lawhon from what I know of. Ariel Foxman is the managing editor, therefore he has been there for a while. Nothing is wrong with a man being the editor of a fashion magazine. Hal Rubenstein is one of the fashion directors at InStyle magazine. He has been giving his amazing and iconic style tips for years. If he would become the editor of InStyle, I wouldn’t have a problem with it. The only shift I heard at InStyle was Eilidh MacAskill, managing editor of InStyle, has been named editor in chief of British InStyle, effective February. It’s just a new year and the magazine is just rebuilding itself like any other magazine.
