Like many of you I am an editorial wannabe stuck doing something else. In this case I work as a marketing associate for a website. I started in October last year and have only been at the job for 3+ months. The job consists of putting together various proposals for our advertising partners and some events. I don;t love it but I need a job. Especially in this economy am lucky to have not gotten laid off yet as a couple of people have already.
My boss is always pointing out what am doing wrong, not doing or not doing enough. I think I was off to a great start and as I have gotten more responsibilty I agree that there’s a lot of room for improvement. I am still learning too. Maybe I am slow, I don’t know but I am trying though. I mean I want to keep this job even if it’s not my dream job and while I do wish I was doing something else like editorial, it’s still a pretty good gig.
I’m getting really upset and nervous because it’s a small company and I don’t want bad things said about me but my boss is really not helping. I tried to talk to her but as we are a small team she just said I need to step it up. She’s not sure what I need to do but I need to do something and fast. I know some things I need to work on but overall am just not sure what this means. I mean if we do have more lay offs who knows! Before I started the person who was in my position also left the job in a couple of months. There is a lot to do among a small team so maybe that could be it. But I’m really starting to dislike working with my boss now and it’s getting me down all the time. I need it to change becos I don’t want to start coming to work to a place I hate or people I hate. She ignores me a lot. Doesn’t really talk to me much except when she has to on projects. I’ve tried to engage in conversations but not very succesfully. She is a very friendly person as she is with the other person on our team so I know it must be me.
Sorry for the long message but I am really nervous, sad and getting discourgaed. I can’t leave this job as it will look bad on my resume and am not even sure if I can find another in this economy. Any advice/help/insight/input would be awesome.

Thank you for replying! It’s good to know that maybe I’m not so bad or super crazy. Unfortunately though, this is not my 1st job. I worked in media planning (which is death to anyone who wants to get into editorial/creative type job, for about a little over a year and was extremly miserable. It’s like the worst job anyone, especially for anyone who wants to be creative but I had to take it(I was on a visa and didn’t have a choice). I finally managed to switch into this marketing position which at least lets me write som promotional type stuff. So it’s possible they’re expecting more from me. It’s just so discouraging and now a bit too late for me to enter in to editorial so I might have to just put up with it. :(

If you are not completely happy with your current job and think it would be better if you could find yourself a job with some other media planning services business. The work environment I think should be a helpful one and not ideally a place where its creating doubts in you.

Media Planning is well, exactly that- you plan the media(TV,Print,Radio, billboards, posters and other out of home media) for your clients. I think the experience defintely depends on the type of clients and agency you work in. It’s usually not done in house so it’s out sourced to agencies like OMD, MCANN, Zenith etc. There’s a lot of top agencies out there with interesting clients. I worked in one of the biggest agencies for almost 2 yrs and was also lucky enough to work on a beauty client. My other was a diabetes account which was not that interesting.
Usually when you start out you don’t have much of a choice where you get placed and even when you get promoted a lot of people have gone to account they don’t like just to get the promotion so that’s basically your call. Also the pay is not that great for entry-level jobs but maybe it’a little more than editorial as I’ve heard they don’t pay much at all. Also if you do work at a good agency the perks can be nice. Also depending on your account and team etc you can get a lot of perks like concert tickets, free meals, manicures, spa days etc. All of these are really attractive, especially at first but wasn;t enough for me to stay in the job.
Your media plan also changes according to each client. For example, if you plan for a beauty account you would be running data reports to figure out which print magazines suit your product/brand the best. Which time period would their commercials be running in. That sort of thing. Like Cosmo is not the best fir for Loreal regenerist product but maybe Ladies home journal and More magazines are because it’s targeted for mature women. Lets run their commercials betwee 10.00pm & 11.00pm time slots at night for Fox & Nbc netwroks and at 4.00pm in time for Oprah. I’m making this stuff up but you get the point.
There’s also a bit more to it than that but that’s basically it. You also do a lot with sales numbers as you tend to work closely with product managers and marketing to make sure you are targeting and placing your product right. You watch compititors media plans and sales numbers to see where they place in the cateory in comparison to your product. A lot of presentations etc. You work closely with Account management teams usually in another agency and sometimes PR teams etc.
The client puts you in charge the budget they have allocated for each product or brand for each year. The media planning team says x amount goes to TV, x for print etc. All of this can be broken down by product too. For example: Loreal Body cream has a seperate budget from the eye cream etc. What I didn’t like that much about media planning was that bascially though you are the keeper of the entrie budget for your client and you tell others where money goes you don’t really get to a lot of fun projects. If a product is launching or if there’s a fun event media planners may help with the budget but marketing and everyone else really gets to be involved in the actual project. Maybe it was just my experience but I spent crazy hours making budget summaries and competitive reports and various other reports while elveryone else really experienced working with the products. I think Account management or marketing might be more interesting if you wanted a change and try something more in th corporate/business side of things.
I myself switched to marketing not too long ago and while I do miss it not being to creative at least some of the projects I get to work on deal directly with the product. I just wish my boss would calm down a bit more! :)

I’m in a similar situation, where my boss (the top editor at my magazine) is a hard person to deal with, and i don’t think he’s partial to me. But, you have to remember that you are new. This IS your first real job, and you’re bound to make mistakes. I’m not exactly happy in my job, and I’ve worshipped magazine journalism forever. But, there will be road blocks, and this is just once of them.
My advice is to just take it day by day. If you can, ask your boss for specific examples of what you messed up on and how you can improve. Truth be told, you’re probably just overthinking it, like we all do, and you’re probably not that bad! Worse comes to worse, you’ll be let go, and then you’ll find a job that you’re passionate about. I know that sounds inconsiderate, but most people that have been laid off have found a way to make the best of it (starting their own businesses, finding better jobs, switching career tracks, etc.) That’s the best and only way to go.
Don’t worry, it’ll all be okay. Just do the best that YOU can do, as you really can’t do anything more than that.
