So I know this has been exhausted on ed2010, but I’m seriously pulling my hair out. How do you get past the generic CV and not come off as ridiculous? Does anyone have any good links of sample CV (and im not talking about the generic google results).
At my past internship, I was put in charge of “editing” through resumes for my replacement intern, and I noticed they went two ways 1) professional and boring or 2) creative, but kind of ridiculous. Hence, I ended up going more for the professional ones with consideration of their qualifications, of course.
Any example of how to do a creative cv successfully would be great. I know taking from it is out of the question (hence, the non-generic part), but it would be nice to see how its done.

Follow up about cover letters
My question with cover letters has always been how to start one- by that I mean how should the first line read? Should you just write Hello, my name is TK and I am writing to apply for TK position, or should you go for something creative?

Your name should be in a heading so its not really necessary to introduce it again, but the next person who starts off with “Want to know why this cover letter is different from ever other cover letter??” is gonna get it right in the gut.
When I was in college applying for internships, I started out by saying “I am a junior at TK College majoring in English, with experience in TK, TK, and TK, and I am interested in interning for Nameof Magazine in the summer of 2006” or something simple. This kind of sentence, by the way, should give anyone who cannot let go of the “objective” line on their resume a reason to feel better about deleting it—you state it right here in your letter!
Now that I’ve graduated, I begin by saying how I found out about the job (that includes “I read with interest the listing on Mediabistro for an associate editor at Nameof Magazine” as well as “Jane Doe suggested I contact you regarding the editorial assistant position at Nameof Magazine”) and then segue right into my relevant experience.
When people say “creative” in regard to cover letters, they don’t mean kitschy or contrived, they just mean more unique than “To Whom It May Concern, I am applying for…” because in a cover letter you have limited space, and every single word on that page has to work really hard for you. When in doubt, strike it out—if it’s not telling your reader something new and it doesn’t help you create your image as the most perfect applicant of all time, you don’t need it.
As someone who has written
As someone who has written tons of cover letters, and scoured through plenty of intern applications, my best advice would be to keep it simple. Explain in a sentence where you heard about the job (especially if you heard about it through a contact at the mag). Say why you’re qualified for the specific position. Explain how your past experience is relevant to the position, and what you can do that would benefit the magazine. Sum up and say you look forward to learning more. Voila! A clear, concise, well-written letter impresses me much more than someone who tries very hard to be creative.

For the record, in case anyone else is unfamiliar with the original poster’s terminology, a CV is a resume (short for curriculum vitae), not a cover letter.
That said, I think a resume/CV should be boring and professional, while your cover letter is the place to be creative if you feel the need. Most people just skim a resume, they don’t read every word, so you want to make sure that it is concise, readable, and to the point, not overloaded with information and definitely not overdesigned—Times New Roman and plenty of white space are your friends here. Consider your cover letter a writing sample, even though it should be focused on the topics mentioned by the first respondent above, and feel free to make it more of a reflection of your style.

in the cover letters i have read thru the years, the good ones detail how they found out about the job (great chance to name drop), why they would be good for the job, and a brief sentence about why they are interested in the magazine. to me the great cover letters are great because the writing is clean, smooth and has no typos or inconsistencies. basically it’s good because it’s not bad. wow, there are a ton of bad cover letters.
the other thing to avoid in cover letters is arrogance or over confidence. we know you have some experience, but boasting about being the best and knowing everything in the world is just annoying, so try to avoid that. i also think it’s important to be super positive in your cover letter about the direction of the magazine or whatever since people like positive energy. it’s also important to not make every sentence about you, so throwing in a compliment about the mag that is more specific then “i love it” is welcome and appreciated.
this doesn’t really answer the original posters question except that the CV/resume should be clean, precise, and readable (let’s be honest, we all just look at the employer and the title and move on) and the cover letter is your chance to shine.
