I do agree with it after reading this Argumentative Term Paper. I don’t regret the decision one bit. Given the current slump, however, I was tempted to apply to grad school, but thanks to your post I got just enough of a pick-me-up to get back on the job hunt. Keep up the posts, you’re awesome. I got a few online clips from my internship and worked on some cool projects. I don’t understand why people have problems with the fashion department, either. The fashion interns that were there my semester had a great time, played music all day and helped with photo shoots.

if people are looking for entry level positions that are perhaps less lucrative and have less of a direct line to where they want to go (but will still be a paying job), i highly recommend science, health, and boring b2b publications. i currently work at a medical/science journal and while i was initially looking to start moving toward my goal of a political publication this year, the market is just not cooperating. so i’m planning on getting a different science/medical publishing position in a city that’s more conducive to making connections than the one i’m in now. so just taking a two second look at craigslist, springer (the biggest book publisher and second biggest journal publisher after elsevier) is hiring 2 EA’s in NY and the listing says “perfect for college grads.” computer science degree | college degree

There are so many opportunities for internship in DC that it is ridiculous. Take your pick: Washingtonian, the Post style section, Fishbowl DC, Metromix, the City Paper, Examiner, any DC bureau, Smithsonian, National Geographic, any of the hill papers (CQ, Roll Call, etc.), Wash Times (although it is in SE), anything in Atlantic Media Company (National Journal), and you could always commute to Baltimore and work for something there. Many of these deadlines have passed, but I’m sure you’d be able to find something. You could even do PR for an organization that puts out a membership mag and get clips that way. And you can freelance.
I would even say it is easier for entry writers to find work in DC than NYC.
Yeah, I really think it depends on what you want to do. Obviously, there would be a great amount of political based mags, but not a lot on fashion, for example.
I believe Smithsonian is in DC. Its a great publication that is not all about politics, so you might consider checking that out.
Hey, I’m from Northern VA as well and TRUST me there is nothing in DC to do! I’m not sure what you’re specifically interested in but if it’s obviously politics related and such then stay in the DC area! I personally looked into magazine internships for fashion but I never got responses back from DC Modern and others…but I did intern at Washington Life for advertising, which I was so not interested in. So, I resorted to New York and was lucky to land an internship with a publication for the summer. But trust me, no one knows how difficult it is to get into anything fashion/magazine related in DC than me!
