Can I wear boots to an interview?

Hey guys!

I have two interviews tomorrow in NY, and I am chock out of ideas on what to wear. I’m from Georgia, and this weather is no effing joke—and I have absolutely no experience dressing for it! Is it okay to wear knee-high boots? I don’t want to wear pants but I don’t want to have my legs out either…and so far tights really aren’t doing it for me. Obviously nothing tarty…think more Banana Republic than Pretty Woman. But even so, is this still interview-inappropriate? One is for a fashion internship and one editorial, so I thought maybe it would fly, but just wanted a second opinion before I become known as the hooker girl :-) Sorry if I’m nitpicking! Any thoughts or suggestions on what to wear?

And also, how do you guys survive the winter weather?

re: surviving winter weather

i hear you…i’m from the dc area so it’s rough.

tips: layering, long underwear, walking with your ipod/whatever and keeping the music fast so you keep moving, hot chocolate/coffee, keeping the heat on in your apt (it’s worth the $), earmuffs, buy a coat with a hood and one of those puffy collars, know the subway inside and out so you don’t have to walk far when it’s cold…you get the idea! :) good luck!

Depends on the boots

If they’re stylish, expensive-looking boots you should be okay, and wear tights under them—it really will keep you warmer and you won’t have to worry about flashing anybody. Wear something simple on top, like a solid-colored knit sweater, and you should be fine; I’ve worn the same black sweater and black pencil skirt with black tights and boots to more interviews than I care to remember—going monochrome makes it more about texture and silhouette and makes the boots less overtly sexy.

You can wear boots, just

You can wear boots, just make sure the boots are sophisicated, not made for strippers. You want to be classy, not trashy. I have seen female employees wear appropriate boots at my last internship with a one-piece dress or skirts that came right at the knee or just below the knee.

As for surviving winter, especially New York City where you get that terrible tunnel wind & you may have to walk a certain # of blocks, bundle up. From observation, I’ve seen woman wear boots, like rain/snow boots or sneakers depending on the weather. Then once they get to their office, they change into their formal shoes.
