Hi, I graduated with a magazine journalism degree back in May ‘08. I’ve been working in Chicago for a PR firm, but my boyfriend and I have plans to move to LA in May 2009. I’d really love to get back into magazine and/or newspaper writing, but I’d take a PR job as well.
Does anyone live in the LA area and have any tips for finding a job there? What kind of magazine/newspaper/PR opportunities are available?
Also, if you have any other tips on the general LA area (I’ve never been there) I’d greatly appreciate it!!

Chicago
Hey,
I’m in Chicago too and going for editorial doesnt work out well here either, but I have been working with a designer here and I have been thinking of going into costume design I am planning out to LA to go for that. I am sick of the cold here and I think my chances with finding a designer to work with in LA will be higher there. I know NYC is the place to be for almost everything, but I do know for you that NYC is where you should go for journalism after a lot and I mean A LOT of research I figured that out….I just hope LA has better chances with fashion than Chicago does….
Out of curiosity...
Which PR firm do you work at?
not many
I graduated in December of ‘07 and moved to LA. In the past year, I worked as an intern at 3 different magazines, and when I left LA in October, I was essentially working as an unpaid associate fashion editor. I grew up in California, and knew that LA would have more opportunities for journalism than San Fran would.
Unfortunately, I found that editorial positions in LA are few and far between. You might have better luck with a PR job, but I can tell you from personal experience that the magazine/newspaper opportunities in LA are not numerous enough or salaried enough to pay the bills.
I strongly recommend NOT moving to LA to pursue a career in journalism unless you have a paid, full time position lined up prior to moving.
