For my aspiring fashion editors or current fashion assistants at our most beloved publications, what are your thoughts on CW’s newest reality show, Stylista? Particularly those who have worked for Elle, do you feel like the show depicts the environment in working for a fashion publication? If you want to watch the full episodes online, you can go to www.watch-stylista.com or www.cwtv.com. It’s only four episodes in, but the show definitely makes me want to pursue fashion on an editorial level even more.

watch the you tube interview with Anne Slowey
The show is obviously a bad knock off from The Devil Wears Prada. The book and movie was so popular that they’re milking it for everything it’s worth.
However, look up the interview of Anne Slowey about the show. I think she gives some real, down to earth advice on how to succeed in the industry.

The drama is a bit much
Yeah, I think the serious candidates are already the people they got rid of. We all know that there are people in fashion that have never stepped foot into a university or never majored in it. But seriously these people don’t know what an empire waist or dart is or even know how to dress a mannequin. It makes me a bit frustrated because I’ve been trying to break into this sector of the industry since graduating with my Fashion Design/Merchandising degree and some of these people on the show aren’t there for the right reasons. Nevertheless, like you said I do learn a bit from the editorial challenges not so much the assistant tasks. I’ll keep watching though to see if it gets any better but so far, I’m Team Ashlie or Danielle.
Eh haven't watched
I haven’t watched it, but I get the idea. Basically no drama=no money. If they put people who know nothing about fashion the ratings will probably go up. As for wanting to break in I have been doing pro bono work and now I just nailed a great internship that will hopefully lead to hire in three months and I have already contacted people about working in a restaurant until I know for sure and it is so far looking good. The thing is if you want it bad enough you will do what ever it takes even if you do have to live in a tent or where ever for a certain amount of time….and who knows if they have a season 2 you could always try to get cast for it.
I HATE IT! I watch it bc
I HATE IT! I watch it bc I’m so interested in fashion writing, but the show sucks. And I hate that it’s going to flood an already flooded market. But whatevs lol
The “drama” that the
The “drama” that the producers try to play out is actually a bit dry, and I didn’t know that was very possible. I like the editorial challenges (assistant challenges are okay) because I learn a lot from them.
As for Anne Slowey, yeah, she’s supposed to be more boho chic. I think they’re just trying to cash in on the Devil Wears Prada phenomenon.
It does make me want to pursue fashion editorial. I always have, and even though these kinds of shows glamorize it beyond reality, it’s still my dream.

It's laughable.
I happened to intern a few floors above the actual location of the Elle offices, and it looks nothing like that. It’s located in Midtown, but on the show it seems a lot more like Soho. There are lots of monotone cubicles, and I know a former intern who can attest to that. As for Anne Slowey, I’ve only seen her in person once, but she was more boho-chic than diva. The truth might only be in the tasks they complete, but other than that, the whole thing is fake. It’s almost as bad as when Lauren “interned” for Teen Vogue on The Hills. Almost.
I figured that
I figured that some things were just to boost ratings. My next question was going to be about Anne Slowey—they’re portraying her as this Anna Wintouresque diva but it seems like she’s trying to play up that image. Wow, there’s no true representation of what working for a magazine is like without all the drama and gimmicks. Nevertheless, I still love Elle and I still want to pursue a career in fashion editorial.
these tasks are stupid and
these tasks are stupid and unrealistic, and i think they chose candidates who would be dramatic and silly rather than those with actual experience to be on the show. who doesn’t know what a pin tuck or a dart is? or how to write captions, etc.
...
i’ve only seen one episode (last week i think? with the kids bday party) but i don’t think its that outrageously unrealistic. a lot of the contestants are bitchy and dumb, but guess what? so are a lot of editors. haven’t you ever worked with someone and wondered every day how they got to where they are? unfortunately not everyone in this industry is the hard working altruistic type. same goes for what seems like ridiculous drama. when i think about the things that cause drama in my office…. i can’t even explain it to friends outside the industry bc it seems so absurd.
i want to see more of this show to really know, but i didnt think the challenge i saw was that unrealistic. i think they were teaching basic skills that interns are taught, albeit in a COMPLETELY different way.
all i know is i’m jealous of the apartment and the cash for clothes they get if they win!!!!
