Is it ever a good idea to mention recent layoffs in an interview or cover letter? My general idea would be no, but I only ask because I want to come out as someone who knows what’s going on in media news (i.e. not oblivious). Sorry if this is a totally dumb question, just wanted to hear any thoughts. Basically, I can see cons to doing this, but I also don’t want people to think I don’t care or follow their company.
Thanks in advance!

Maybe not in a cover letter.
I’ve done in interviews and its led to generally good conversation. It’s also an easy way to explain why you cant go back to previous internship companies. A lot of interviewers like to talk general current events that aren’t too invasive and so knowing the current events of the industry should be good. I’ve also gotten a general good response to talking about layoffs and the internet and where the industry is heading. It’s the younger guard offering fresh ideas. Just don’t harp on it too long.
Maybe not in a cover letter. That might be odd.
Thanks
