Just an FYI, the top people there are impossible to work for. Very unfair and mean. I interned there and watched them go through at least 3 assistant editors in 3 months, just letting them go with no reason. I don’t know if something went down with all three, but I highly doubt that.
But, then again it is Bauer..

I was an assistant editor...
I was yet another assistant editor at M Magazine who they let go for no reason after less than three months. Seriously. They didn’t give me a reason. They just said it wasn’t working out and that they would give me unemployment because I didn’t do anything wrong. I remember telling her that I didn’t even receive any kind of warning and she told me that she did have a meeting with me. She said that two weeks in she asked me how things were going. ????? This is a warning that I’m about to get fired??? This was almost 3 years ago and I still don’t understand.
Yes, they come off as very nice, but they’re very two faced. I loved the work there, but I still blame M for the situation that I’m in now. My resume looks a hot mess because I had to take a temp job to pay the bills after getting fired for no reason and then the economy turned to **** and now when I interview everyone asks what happened at M and why I was working some temp job I don’t have a good response at all.
As for the commute, it wasn’t bad for me. I lived in Washington Heights at the time and could walk 10 mins tops to the GW Bridge. It only took 15-20 minutes to get there once on the bus. So the commute just completely depends on where you’re living obviously.
Yikes.. That sounds awful!
Yikes.. That sounds awful! What about M’s art department? Is it the same with them as it is edit? I had an interview with art and was curious if you knew if they had the same work environment.

I had a great internship at M
I really have to disagree with the comments of this original poster. My summer internship at M was great. Since it was a small staff, I was able to work closely with everyone, including the top editors who I found neither unfair nor mean. Yeah, of course, there was grunt work like any other internship, but I also was able to do cool things like interview up and coming stars and write content for the mag’s webpage. As for the magazine “going through” 3 assistant editors, I can’t say for sure, but I seem to recall them having job candidates freelance for trial periods, which I’m assuming is the case here. Anyway, I’d happily recommend the internship to any of my other journalism-major friends.
M was a good first internship
I interned at M after my freshman year of college, and I thought it was a good learning experience. We were allowed to sit in on editor meetings, proofread copy, write quizzes, horoscopes, and embarrassing moments for the website, My Space page, and magazine. Yes the position included its fair share of grunt work like transcribing, opening reader mail and sorting contest entries, they also allowed us to attend events and conduct interviews with celebrities (albeit those of high school musical fame).
I think it was a great first internship, and the associate editor and deputy editor were always available for questions and helpfully edited blogs and provided suggestions. I guess it is just what you make of it.

bauer
I’ve interviewed with Bauer and done some edit tests and a friend of a friend is an EiC there. For me, it was just too far. Average commute is 3 hours a day. You have to take a bus and or train into Englewood You’d need a car to make it work.
But, from my experience, if you do a good job, you’ll be fine. Go for it and apply. M mag is run by a nice woman. She’s fairly new there, a couple years I think. I’ve met two really nice women that worked for Quizfest and Astrogirl. They were fun too. The office vibe is like that game “Girl Talk” or something like that.
If you can do the commute, apply! Everyone is different, maybe you’ll fit. You won’t know unless you apply.
Good Luck!
Also, the tabloid side is good to their permalance/freelancers.

i have never heard of m
i have never heard of m magazine, but bauer is super bad news and the commute out there to jersey is just plain crazy.
Why
is Bauer “super bad news”? I’ve heard this from multiple sources as well as from some of these threads, but I don’t quite get what’s so bad about it. Is the work environment really that unbearable?

There are a lot of threads here and elsewhere about Bauer in general; this is one of the more recent. Search on this site and elsewhere and you’ll find out a bit more about the place; pretty much jibes with your first impression.

any positive thoughts to M Magazine, or just a beware beware beware for the safety of your job sort of feel?
unrelated, but still worthwhile, when you were interning there, where were you living? i know englewood cliffs is close to manhattan and the gw bridge, but realistically, how is that commute?

ugh that sounds awful.
unrelated, but when you interned at M Magazine where were you living? as in, if you’re living in manhattan, how is the commute to englewood cliffs?
The commute from Manhattan
The commute from Manhattan to Englewood Cliffs is atleast 45 minutes to over an hour depending on traffic. The Bauer offices are right by the George Washington Bridge…traffic.. traffic.. traffic. As far as I know… you can not take the train there from the city unless you take a train to a bus or a cab. So you will basically have to take the bus or drive.
