Hey lucyj, I didn’t end up getting the internship (I would like to think it was because of time constraints since I only had two weeks for vacation but maybe I was just poorly qualified and a horrible interviewee) but the interview was short, sweet and very casual. I wore a black blazer, blouse and skirt with tights and booties. I don’t think you need to go all-out but have fun with your outfit and look sharp. She asked me about my activities on campus, the magazines I was involved in, why I wanted to intern there, etc etc. At the end, I asked her a couple questions about the work environment and her position. Nothing scary. Best of luck!! When’s your interview?

I was just the opposite - magazine student with no fashion experience whatsoever (save for the blogs I read every day). I think you’ll be fine though, everyone’s got to start somewhere and since it’s in the accessories closet, I’m sure your fashion background will be much more useful to them than having editorial experience anyway.

No Academic Credit
Yea…my school didn’t offer academic credit, but they did have a loop hole that I never took advantage of, but probably you can. Instead of academic credit we had to create independent courses around the internship. Could you do this…perhaps for a communications, sociology, or gender studies department..find a professor that’d be interested, create the class and have the internship serve as research. You’d prolly also get a really good grade since its something you’re invested in and if you let your editors now, they may be impressed.

So I just found out from my school that I won’t be eligible to receive academic credit for this internship because of my year, which is a bit devastating to say the least. I would obviously not mind in the slightest to take on the unpaid internship with no benefits if it was offered to me but I don’t know if that’s legal. Is there any other way that I can still do the internship (maybe by asking for some sort of stipend or any other small reciprocation)? Or is there other documentation I could use instead of receiving credit?

I never got credit; my college offered transcript notation rather than credit and no one ever said anything about it. Nor did anyone ever follow up to make sure I filled out the paper and got transcript notation, which I never did. I wasn’t ever asked once in six internships to provide a letter to that effect from my school, either, so unless they specifically ask for it, I wouldn’t bother to volunteer one.
There is no real indication that offering credit in lieu of pay actually covers the company’s ass in a legal sense anyway, so I tended to treat that conversation as just a formality—as long as you tell them that you’re getting something, they’ll pretty much accept that and not worry about it.

You can get your college to write an official letter explaining its policy and stating that it supports your internship. Not all magazines will accept this kind of letter, of course, but it’s a possibility.

That’s great! Congrats on the interview. She’s really nice so don’t be too worried. Just make sure to talk about your accessories background and whether you’ve worked in a closet before. She’ll probably ask you about what you find most difficult about working in a closet as well. I kept it simple with a simple black dress, tights, and booties. Good luck!
