Hi all,
I’m a little torn about something I hope you can help me on. I’ve been offered a spring internship at a fairly large niche mag (national publishing house). In any other case, I’d jump at the chance, but I’m worried about the time commitment - especially since it’s my last semester in college and I want to experience as much of college life as I can in my last few months.
Some background: I’ve interned for about 8 weeks 2 summers ago at a local newspaper (writing focused), at a large national magazine in a company wide program last summer (full-time, fact-checking, contributing to planning meetings), and am interning now at local, but prominent mag closer to my school (web experience, some writing for the website).
Basically my question: Do you think its necessary/would really be to my benefit to do a spring internship? I know this might make me sound lazy, but I’m not. I just might prefer to spend my last semester in college enjoying the classes I’m taking within my major, focusing on my mag networking, and maybe pitching more since I’d have more time to write.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so, so much.

I wouldn’t spend time
I wouldn’t spend time interning not if you have loans that you’ll need to pay back unless you don’t need to worry about paying them off then go intern all you want for most college grads getting jobs in their field will be hard enough they may as well have gotten a fake college diploma considering how many people i know not using what they paid to learn which is pretty sad.

Way to waste everyone’s time infiltrating the boards with your ads. Guess what? These are some of the smartest people you can find on this board, and it’s not working on us.

you should absolutely intern!
I definitely understand the allure of having a semester to just enjoy your classes without having to worry about interning at the same time, but you would gain so much for having another internship on your resume. The more experience you have, the better.
But that’s not even the reason to take the internship. The reason is so that you can approach this one differently from the others, so that you can really shine in this internship, so that when graduation day comes along, either the magazine you’re interning at will offer you a job, or else your editors will love you so much that they’ll help you find a job elsewhere. Since your internships will have been from previous semesters, unless you made a major impression on the editor you worked for, they may not remember you, or at least not remember you well enough. Of course, it’s possible that you made great relationships at your previous internships and still keep in touch with your editors on a regular basis (and if you did, that’s great!!!), but it could only work in your best interest to take this internship and make sure it’s your best one yet.

I think I’ve decided on a nice compromise. Thanks, all!
I would say that you don’t
I would say that you don’t have to do the internship. I’ve heard of people that have done SIX [!] and still have not landed a job (and they’ve been out of college for MONTHS!). I don’t think it’s the number of internships you have, it’s making the most out of the internships you did. Enjoy your last semester at college, they’re the best years of your life :)
I would do it, if it were me
I don’t know if that’s the answer you want to hear, since you kind of sound like you’re angling for permission not to take it, but a few years out of college, this is my general opinion on the matter:
The things that you love about college life, you’ll never get enough of. One more semester of unlimited time to hang out with your friends, goof around in the library, and take classes with your favorite professors sounds like a precious thing, because it is, but those are things that, to some degree, you’ll miss for the rest of your adult life—giving them your undivided attention now will in no way prevent those feelings later. It is also a fact that life expands to fill the space allotted. While it’s important to have downtime to just do nothing, I find that people tend to be really creative about making sure that they have time to just chill, and that is true no matter how many major commitments they have. Looking back on it, the only thing I wished was that I had done more of everything, not less.
If you really feel that you don’t have anything to gain by it and you don’t want to do it, then by all means, keg-stand your last semester away. But I think, if you’re someone who reads this board, you’re probably seeing that those internships are important, and while three is good, four might well be better. There’s a limited amount of networking you can do over the course of a semester, since you won’t be able to take any jobs until May anyway, and emailing someone to tell them you’re interning and are getting ready to work is more compelling than telling them you’re yet another college graduate who is now in need of a job in publishing.
Thank you :)
Hmm, all very good points. I’ll certainly take what you said to heart.
