Is it okay to look for a job, including freelancing while interning? I am interning now, unpaid, but that doesn’t mean it will turn into a full-time job. If I find a job listing that I am currently interested in, should I ask them if I can use their names for references. Or do I not mention their names at all when writing a resume & cover letter? I’m unsure as what to do. Thanks.

YES it’s OK to look for paid work while you’re an unpaid intern! As far as name dropping and references, I wouldn’t ask unless you’ve had some substantial experience with your current coworkers — enough that they can give an honest recommendation of you. If you feel like you’ve had that experience, go ahead and ask them if you can use them as a reference. I wouldn’t name drop in a cover letter unless the person I’m mentioning specifically told me to apply and has a connection to the hiring party. Just my opinions, but that’s the mode I operate under.
