I’m currently an edit intern at a major magazine company outside of NYC. I will be moving to NYC at the end of December, and I’m wondering if anybody on this site has any advice on how to break into freelance writing while I’m looking for a full-time position (could be a long time in this climate).
I have done informationals with people who have told me that freelancing is all about who you know — knowing people at this or that magazine, asking them if they need any help, pitching story ideas whenever possible, and hoping they need something written.
Does anyone here have any different experiences with it? Is it possible to break in at a mag where no one knows you? Also what about freelancing for the web?
Any help would be appreciated. This is just something I’ve recently started thinking about and I think I would really enjoy it.
