COVER LETTER HELP!!

Hi everyone…I am in desperate help: I am in the process of writing a cover letter and I am completely stuck! I’m done with my resume, but I need to have this cover letter done to start applying for internships. I emailed several editors about summer internships and some told me to send my resume and cover letter to them now. I’ve read Ed’s advice on cover letters and I have looked at some online samples I found off of Google, but none of them pertained to the magazine industry. This might be a lot to ask, but if anyone is willing to look at what I have and critique it, that would be wonderful! Thank you!! My email is marissa.tarabocchia@villanova.edu if anyone would be willing to help/send a sample letter, etc.

Villanova!!

Wow, that’s crazy…I didn’t expect to hear from another VU student. I just sent you an email, Emerald!

Villanova :)

I almost fell off my chair when I saw that villanova.edu e-mail haha - the mag industry is not something you often hear about at ‘Nova (you know, because it’s not accounting or engineering - HA). Anyway, I’m senior at VU and I’ve got a few mag internships under my belt, so if you’d like to e-mail me what you’ve got (magemerald37@gmail.com - I like to keep my real name under wraps on the boards), maybe I can be some help (although, I hardly consider myself and expert at any of this yet). Also, I wouldn’t underestimate Career Services - although I’ve found their resume/cover letter help might not be specific enough to the field, using the tools they have in the office I’ve been able to get in touch with a couple alumni in the field - but more about that if you have questions.

Any other Villanovans lurking out there???

I'm not from...

I’m not from Villanova but I have been getting a lot of responses from my cover letters lately from mag internships.

I treat it kinda like a one page column about myself, why I would be great, my experience, etc. I use my own voice and try to ignore anything that sounds too much like I’m applying for a buisness job. This is the magazine industry, get creative and show them who you are within the first thing they will read of yours. Before your clips, before your resume…

Hope that helped.

i know this is hell of old,

i know this is hell of old, but if you are still on the boards…do you mind emailing a sample?

Thanks!!

Thanks so much…it definitely helped!
