City/regional magazine salaries?

Hey, does anyone know salary information for city or regional magazines? I’m curious what an entry-level editor (sometimes there’s an EA, sometimes it’s straight to assistant editor) makes and how it compares to, say, CN or Hearst jobs. The cost of living is probably less in most regional mag markets, but the staffs are probably smaller too so it’s hard to guess. Any info would be great, thanks!

The EA at the regional magazine I used to work for made $28K.

less than the big names

city and regional mags pay much less than conde nast and hearst.

EAs or asst eds make about 25k which is only a little less than the 30k that bigger publishers pay, but the pay differences get larger the more senior you get in your career.

associate eds at regional mag make about 38k, but make about 55k at larger pubs.

senior eds at regional mags make about 60k, but make about 80 -150k at larger pubs.

eic’s at regional mags make about 80k, but make about 200 -500k at larger pubs.

Mimi, for the sake of clarity, I think it should be noted that the salaries you posted for “larger pubs” are for just that - larger, well-known, household-name type of magazines.

I work at a smaller (but well-respected) national magazine and I think the salaries for upper-level editors are actually more in tune with the regional salaries you posted.

yes, i was giving estimates

yes, i was giving estimates based on my friends and me who work at conde and hearst. i would assume that small national titles and B2B titles are definitely more in line with small regional title salaries. smaller magazine, smaller salary in general.
