Title vs. Money

Hypothetical question: if you had to choose between two jobs, let’s say one at Hearst, or Conde at a great title or one at a lesser known web site, or a smaller pub that paid more and still allowed you to do all the same things you would do @ a Conde or Hearst Pub, which would you choose?

i would take the big name

i would take the big name job unless the money difference is more than 7k, then i would go with the money. i started at a small mag and it was a miserable place. people tend to be happier at more successful mags since they have better benefits and security and enjoy their jobs more… and it’s better for your resume. people are lazy and love to see fancy names on resumes…

For me it would depend on

For me it would depend on the actual amount of money. If you’re choosing between 30k at a major pub and 35k at a smaller pub, I would take the major title. The reason to work at a smaller company, to my mind, is that you get more experience than you would at a bigger place. If you’d be doing the same kind of work either place, you might as well work somewhere that will take you farther. If it’s a lot more money and you actually would be equally happy, then you may as well take the money, but those titles are coveted for a reason.

In my own personal experience, I make 50% more at my current job than I did at my last job doing work I love, but at a magazine no one has ever heard of. On the money/prestige/responsibility spectrum, you often only get two out of three—and to be honest, as long as you have those two you can usually live with yourself, no matter which two they are.

I'd go with the smaller pub, I think...

I mean, if you’re going to be paid more, and you’ll get to do the same stuff there that you’d do at another big name magazine, why wouldn’t you take that job, right? A big name helps, but it isn’t always an entry point into the world of dream magazines. If you have other big-name mags on your resume, where you might have interned at, then I don’t think it matters if you take the job at Hearst or Conde. I think you should focus on going where you’ll get the most opportunity and make the most money, and make connections at other magazines so that you can ultimately move to a big-name title somewhere down the line.
