I was just interviewed for an internship position on Friday and I got it! So, I emailed thanking the person who interviewed me, for some reason though I feel I should actually mail out a thank you note. Is there an unwritten rule for etiquette purposes that one should mail a “thank you for the opportunity” note?

A hand written card is definitely the way to go. I know some people do the email and the card, I personally send a card RIGHT away. Pretty much as soon as I leave the interview I write it and send it out, but I’m sure if you already got the internship then sending one now would be fine. I would say the typical “I look forward to working with you, thank you for taking the time to interview me” etc. is a must but also include something that makes it personal, for ex: “your story about the marc jacobs fashion week show last year was inspiring” obviously mention whatever happened in the interview that you think you can make a personal note of. thats about it…and congrats!!!!
an absolute must
Even though you don’t have to send a thank you note after a job interview, it is best if you so. Sending a handwritten card can go a long way. You can write how you are thankful the employer took the time to interview you because they all have busy schedules. This also gives you the opportunity to mention something you may have forgotten to say during the interview. And finally add how you are looking forward to working with the publication/company.
A thank you e-mail is okay, but a handwritten card speaks more words because you personally wrote it & took time out of your busy life to buy a card for that person. The simple act shows you are not only detailed-oriented, but thoughtful. Giving the interviewer the impression that you will be thoughtful/precise throughout the job. Every bit counts.
I don’t know if you know this, but when sending a thank you, make sure the front cover has little or no design at all. Do not buy a card that has a chaotic design, b/c that is overdone & shows you have a tacky personality as well. Send out the thank you no more than 2 days after the interview. When writing: be brief & sincere. Sometimes deciding who will get the job, is determined by a thank you card. Good luck.
I believe that you send
I believe that you send email notes right after the interview, like immediately after—just a quick one. And then the formal “thank you note” is handwritten and mailed. And yes, this will be a respectful act that will impress your bosses before you start.
Congratulations on the internship, too, by the way!

Always!
I always write handwritten thank you notes to the people who interview me (regardless of the outcome), so I definitely think it would be a good idea. Plus, it’s a great way to impress your boss before you even start :)
