Southern Progress 6 month internship

Has anyone ever applied or interned with Southern Progress? I have an interview with them and wanted to know how the internship was.

Waiting as well

Well, I had trouble with sending my file so I emailed Meg Dedmon asking if she was able to download my PDF. I got a response back from Pam Morgan on March 4th stating that they were still finalizing summer interns but that a confirmation will be sent in 2-3 weeks. I’m not going to expect to hear anything back until the end of this month. Do they tell every candidate that applied whether or not they want an interview with them?

Waiting

Does anyone know how long it will take for them to get back to us about who they want to interview?

Hey magxoxo

I had a few questions about the internship and was wondering if I could ask you. My email is georgiadodge@gmail.com. Hope to hear from you soon!

Birmingham

The good things you’ve heard about Birmingham are accurate. LOVE this place! and of course, the Birmingham chapter of Ed will be in touch upon your arrival.

I'm also applying

I have the same questions as all of you. I’m applying for the July-December session as well. I will hopefully be able to send off everything by next week. I’m still working on the cover letter which is the hardest for me because I’ve done a lot of internships, and it’s hard wanting to share everything but keeping it down to one page.

However, it says we can have anywhere from 1-3 recommendation letters so I only got one. It’s from the previous Associate Editor I worked with but I’m going to see if I can get one from an old professor. I would love to be able to contact those of you who are applying and get any tips/help.

My email address is latdaw2007@yahoo.com.

Rec letters

I’m interning at Southern Living now, and because I applied way last minute, I only was able to get one recommendation letter. I still got a bunch of interviews, so I’m not sure it’s that huge of a deal.

As for the confidential rec letter, I would suggest just emailing Meg Dedmon, the intern coordinator, about it. She’s super nice and really helpful! I’m sure if you explain the situation, she would be more than happy to have you mail it in to her.

If y’all have other questions about the internship, I can definitely email you

I would like as much information as possible

Again you can email me at latdaw2007@yahoo.com. I’m almost finished with everything for the July-Dec. session, but I’m struggling with editing my cover letter down. Also, I’m applying as a post grad and I’m worried that I won’t get accepted because when the session starts I will have been out of school for a year. My mag of choice would be Southern Living…so magxoxo…please feel free to email me anytime.

Another question!

I’m applying for the July-Dec. program, as well. One of my recommenders (a professor) prefers on principle that her letter be submitted confidentially—making it impossible for me to include it in the PDF application the instructions require. Does anyone know if it’s possible for a recommender to mail her letter directly to HR? Is snail mail or e-mail better?

Thanks!

Applying for the internship

Hey Everyone,

Thanks so much to all who have posted - your comments are very helpful!
I don’t know anyone who has done this internship before, so I don’t really know what to expect. This is what I want to be doing after graduation (May 2009), and I want an editor’s internship more than anything.

The application date is a month away, and I was wondering if anyone had tips on the application process? What kind of things should I talk about in my cover letter?
It says that recommendations are supposed to be included in the final PDF, does that mean that whoever writes it sends it to us and then we send it to them?

Who do y’all suggest getting rec letters from? And did y’all apply for multiple internships (I am thinking about applying for the editor’s internship and the new media internship - will this help me out in any way or is it a waste of time?)

Thanks so much for helping out, it’s kind of nerve-wracking, especially when you have no clue what to expect!

- also, if anyone else is applying and feels kind of lost, feel free to contact me and we can kind of go through it together.

Hey y’all, I’m applying

Hey y’all,
I’m applying for the internship as well, (July-December). I’ve heard amazing things about the program and Southern Progress and Birmingham, too. I’m trying to get all of my application materials together this week. My thinking was to just apply for any areas that seemed of interest. I think I’m going to pick four, and hopefully that will help my chances of getting an internship.
I already did my cover letter, which was probably my least favorite part because I hate having to write about myself, especially when it’s for a job. Anyway, I basically just said why I was interested/qualified. I also elaborated on a past experience to prove my abilities. Basically, I wanted to be to-the-point, while trying to convey how much I want an internship at SP.
For my recommendation letters, I asked a professor and a family friend who interned at Southern Progress a few years back. Still looking for that third letter.
Good luck with your application. If you have any other questions, let me know!

Summer Internship '09

I’m applying for a summer internship position and I also don’t know anyone that has done this before. I have no idea what to put in my cover letter. What did you end up deciding on?

I got rec letters from one of my English professors, I’ve had 3 classes with him and he’s seen a lot of my work, the director of the Honors College at my school, and my boss, a pHd/giles professor. I’m also applying for the editors and PR intership.

It is very nerve-wracking, I agree! I am feeling lost and would love any help I can get.. even if it is just someone feeling as lost as I am.

example application

Hey y’all,
I worked as an editorial intern for Coastal Living last year (amazing experience!) and wouldn’t mind fwding my application on to anyone interested. It might give you an idea of a cover letter that worked. I must say, looking back, my application seems pretty weak, but I guess it worked!

I'm applying next session

Congrats to all of you that got the internship with SPC! I’m going to apply for the next session. Please keep us informed here with your experience. Also, any advice/tips you could give me on interviewing, cover letter, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Congrats again!

Has anyone heard back from

Has anyone heard back from them? I thought that I would hear back last week, but I still haven’t…

Just wondering. Thanks.

Yes

They contacted me on Friday, the 12th. They called people who got it, and I believe they mail out a “we’re pursuing another candidate” type letter to people who they didn’t choose.

I’m wondering if anyone has figured out living arrangements yet.

Me too

I got a call on Friday the 12th as well.

Regarding living arrangements, I’m sort of waiting for the e-mail they will send out with both potential places and the e-mail addresses of other interns to potentially be roommates.I imagine they’ll send that once they have the final list of who all the interns will be.

And good luck, k.ames. The way I read one of the e-mails is that they would have all the decisions made by Friday and would then start contacting people. So maybe some of the contacting will be done today? I could be totally off, but it’s possible!

I wholeheartedly recommend

I wholeheartedly recommend Mountain Brook Colonial Grand. If you can get one or two SPC interns to room with you, it’s quite a deal. It was a nice place and quite convenient to TWO grocery stores; both within a short walk (or drive if you’re feeling tired). And excellent shopping at The Summit or down the 280 in Inverness. The area is known as Cahaba Heights/Mountain Brook. Very nice area. :-D Best of luck!

I'll check that out

I still haven’t gotten the info packet that Meg is sending. Has anyone gotten it yet? I want to get the housing question out of the way soon so I don’t have to think about it anymore! Congratulations to everyone who got the job!!!

Living arrangements

Hey - since y’all mentioned living arrangments and the email of potential places they’ll be sending out, I thought I’d give you a heads up of one of the places that will be on the list. It’s the apartment I’ve shared with two interns (one last semester, and one this semester). Here is the listing:

Share an amazing 2BR/2BA apartment (roommate style floorplan) with a clean and friendly former SPC intern. The apartment is located in Lake Heather Reserve, a quiet, gated community (http://liveatlakeheather.com/). It’s one of the nicest you’ll find in the area. It is fully-furnished, with lake views from every room in the apartment. The complex has a nice pool area, workout facility, car care center, outdoor grills, tennis courts, etc. It is conveniently located just a mile off a main highway, with great shops and restaurants just minutes away. I have lived with two other SPC interns, and they have both loved it here. For more info, contact Suzanna Logan at suzanna.logan@gmail.com.

I have a question

I’m interested in applying for this internship, but I have a question regarding post-grad applicants. I graduated this past May (2008), and I’m trying to apply for the June-December session. By the application deadline it will not be over a year since I’ve graduated, but obviously when the session starts it will be. Should I even apply or do you think they will still consider me?

Couldn’t hurt, I guess.

Couldn’t hurt, I guess. Worst they can tell you is that you’ve been out of college too long. I say try it.

No word

I still haven’t heard, so it’s good to hear they still aren’t done because I was really thinking if I didn’t hear from them this week then I didn’t get anything. Do they let you know if you aren’t selected for an internship?

Either way

They’ll let you know either way. You’ll get an email from Meg Dedmon if you don’t get it, but if you do, you’ll get a call from the person you interviewed with.

Don't worry

I was an intern there this year and am rooming with one of the current interns. She’ll be moving on in a couple of weeks, and I’ll need to find a new roommate for the awesome apt. I rent from a Southern Living photographer. That said, I emailed the intern coordinator a day or two ago asking for the spring list so I could send out a housing email, and she said she hadn’t finished matching up spring interns yet. :-)

Ok, I’m getting antsy now.

Ok, I’m getting antsy now. Has no one heard anything still???

Heard anything?

Has anyone gotten any responses yet after interviewing?

I hope everyone’s interviews went well! :)

I haven’t heard anything

I haven’t heard anything yet. I don’t know if that’s a bad thing or not…Anyone else hear or not hear?

Does anyone know how long it

Does anyone know how long it takes to hear back after an interview?

They used to hire about 50 a

They used to hire about 50 a semester, but I’ve heard that they’ve actually cut it to around 30/35, as a result of the economic downturn. If my memory serves me correctly (which it may not), when I interviewed, I believe the intern coordinator said they were interviewing somewhere between 75 and a 100 people.

Numbers

Do you know how many people they interview? I know they hire fifty-ish a semester. Just wondering! Thanks.

Interviews

When I interviewed last year, the editor you were interviewing with would come pick you up in the holding room and take you up to their offices for a one-on-one interview. For most of my interviews, I had to talk with two editors, but it was done separately.

Me too

Hello.

I am interviewing with them as well - next Wednesday and was planning on going to the dinner on Tuesday night. Are the interviews with several people at the same time? I heard that from a friend.

Thanks.

Sweet home SP

I used to work there, but moved back to home to NYC earlier this year to find “better opportunities”. Kind of wish I hadn’t. Great little place with an ultra-friendly environment. Not all internships are as great as the one’s I’ve read (in our branch they did do a lot of grunt work) but overall it’s not the coffee-grabbing, pressure-filled environment you expect in other cities. Southern hospitality, I suppose.

Unfortunately, they’re undergoing a lot of cuts/changes right now. Most of their executive branch was laid off, and they’ve been “restructuring” for quite some time now. But if I had the chance to return, I’d probably take it.

Keep us informed...

Please keep us informed with how your interview went, and if you get the internship, how the experience was. I’m thinking about applying next year, and I just want to get as much information as possible about the internship and the experience there. Thanks

Just finished editorial internship in July

I was CLv’s editorial intern during the 2008 spring internship. It was THE most amazing experience of my life. If you have a chance to take a position with CLv - do it! Most of the time I was busy writing. I wrote a TON (including a well story and a cover story), helped on photo shoots (one on the beaches in FL!), and did other odds and ends (shipping products back, researching story ideas, responding to readers, and some administrative tasks that took about 10 minutes a day). For me, it was NOT a coffee-fetching internship, although I talked with others who were far less busy with real responsibilities. I suppose it just varies.

The interviews, of course, will vary from editor to editor, but I can see that everyone I interviewed with (I had seven interviews) was incredibly kind and welcoming. They’ll want to know why you’re a good fit for their magazine so be sure to be able to reference some specifics about each magazine you’ll be interviewing with. With some editors, we just had a fun chat, with others it was more formal with a “where do you see yourself in ten years” sort of questions. Just be at ease and let your personality show. As much as wanting an intern who is qualified, I have been told that they want to see that you’ll be a joy to work with everyday. Also, come in a suit, if you can. I was surprised at how casually some of the interviewees were dressed, and I think it can set you apart. Also, there may or may not be an edit test. I only took two out of seven interviews. Hope this helps! And best of luck! Congrats on even getting to the interview stage - that’s an accomplishment in and of itself!

I interned there in the fall

I interned there in the fall of 2006. It was a great experience, and I consider it the reason how I got my first job. Having it on the resume is very impressive, and it’s not just a facade—you really will learn a lot. They treat you well and the people are great. I did an editorial internship, so I am not sure if thats what you are interviewing for. But if it is, I did not have to take any test (you will however if you are interviewing with corporate communications). They just want to know about you, your experience, your interest in consumer magazines—the normal type stuff. Be sure you know the magazine’s content at least a little bit. I had interviews for 4 positions, and everyone was super nice. They take you around their office usually and just show you how things work. The hard part is waiting afterward! Don’t count it out until they actually tell you no. I got all depressed because I hadn’t heard from them. Then, on the last possible day to find out—I did! Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions.

Thanks for the info! I

Thanks for the info! I applied for the editorial and pr departments but I’d rather do editorial. I’m just really happy that I got an interview because I applied in March for the Jun-Dec session but I didn’t get it so I applied again for the Jan-Jun 2009 session. After the internship, are you more likely to get a job with Time Inc. Magazines? I knew someone who after the program got a job at People.

Having the internship

Having the internship definetly helps with getting a Time Inc job after if you want one. Make sure you let the editor you will be working with if you get the job know that you are interested in staying there or staying with time inc but maybe in another location. they will work for you to keep you there if they think you should. i was offered a position at southern living after my internship (even though I was on another magazine) based off of the work I did there. i turned it down just because I am from another city and wanted to move back there. But, I still have on my resume, in bold print “i worked for a division of time inc” because it really can impress. So, good luck and I hope you get it!! let me know if you have more questions.

High School Diplomas

SPC was awesome

It was awesome. I had a creative marketing internship. They treat their interns very well. And, they’re paid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is amazing in and of itself! (I’m in NYC right now… eating it with unpaid internships.) If you can land one, I’d say definitely go for it as it’s great experience with a good little branch of Time Inc. Best of luck. Oh yeah, and the grounds are amazing. Nothing like that to be had in NYC, that’s for sure. :-D

Thanks for the feedback!

Thanks for the feedback! I’ve also heard good things about them. What was the interview like? Is there an edit test? I have an interview with them in about 3 weeks and just want to know what to expect.

I had a phone interview,

I had a phone interview, which isn’t normal. They prefer to have their candidates fly or drive in so they can meet in person. They’ll show you around the grounds if you’re interested and they usually try to organize an intern dinner where current interns can meet the intern candidates. I went to one (as a current intern meeting the candidates) and I can tell you we dished some so if you want to know what it’s really like, go to one of those. I think copy interns might have had edits tests. Just study up on AP style and general common sense things and I think you’ll be fine!
