The editorial staffs of

The editorial staffs of Men’s Health, Bicycling, Mountain Bike, Runner’s World, and Organic Gardening are all mostly in Emmaus (although MH does have a growing staff in NYC). Women’s Health, Prevention and Best Life each has five to 10 editors in Emmaus. (Backpacker was sold to a company in Boulder more than a year ago.)

What's it like out there?

Has anyone interned or worked out in Emmaus? What’s the city like?

Well, don't call it a city...

Like others have said, it’s a small town. Fairly cute “downtown” meaning one street with coffee shops, etc. But not much going on otherwise. Rents are reasonable. It kind of feels like you’re removed from the actual magazine industry though, which I find frustrating. But if you’re a small-town type of person, you might like it more. As for the actual Rodale buildings, they do have some nice perks, like the free gym with lots of classes, subsidized caf, etc. Plus lots of weird Indian artwork around if you’re into that kind of thing! :)

I've been out there

It takes about 90 minutes by bus to get there from the Port Authority. It actually seems like a really nice place to live - but I’m not exactly in love with New York, so that’s easy for me to say. Think of Emmaus as the town where Rory lived in Gilmore Girls - small, community oriented, pretty. I know people who are really happy there.

I worked in Emmaus for a

I worked in Emmaus for a year+ and really loved my experience there at Rodale … they treat their employees pretty well … there’s a free gym with classes and trainers, there are locker rooms/showers in all the buildings in case you want to run or bike at lunch, they have several cafeterias that are quite delicious and cheap, lots of nice little perks here and there. As for Emmaus, it’s cute and nice and very affordable. But it’s a small town. It’s right outside Allentown, but if you’re comparing it to NYC, well, there’s no comparison. I actually lived in NYC and commuted out to PA every day (don’t do it, it’s the reason I left), and while I loved the company and the area is beautiful and nice, I love NYC too much. Hope that helps.

Pretty much all of them do

Pretty much all of them do the bulk of their work in Emmaus, but Women’s Health and Best Life are largely in NYC, and Men’s Health and Prevention have substantial NYC staff/offices too. Runners World, Bicycling, Backpacker and the others are all in Emmaus, although they might have a few editorial staffers in NYC or go back and forth.

Men’s Health and

Men’s Health and Runner’s World, I think.
