I recently graduated in April and am hoping to obtain a magazine internship, unpaid or paid. However, a number of opportunities I am interested in state that candidates must be able to receive college credit. Is there any way to get around this? Is is rude to ask for their consideration of me as an intern, despite my inability to receive credit? I have no problem working in an unpaid environment, I just really want the crucial experience!

pretty strict
I work at Hearst and when we post an internship that states “for college credit only”, we only consider candidates that are currently undergrad students. And if you send us your resume and have already graduated, we think, “This person does not follow directions since our posting says FOR COLLEGE CREDIT ONLY”.
Academic Requried
Hi Annie,
How many internships have you done? It seems like the trend now is for college GRADUATES to intern at a magazine as an unpaid intern.
Do you really have to intern? What about freelancing? Unpaid internships do not always lead to employment after the internship is over.
That being said, if you really must intern as a college graduate, try going for places that do not require you to submit it for college credit.
Agreed.
Post-grad internships absolutely, positively, do NOT necessarily lead to a job. Keep that in mind.
I'm on my third post-grad internship.
One of which is at one of those major companies we all aspire to. There ARE loopholes. Smaller or self-owned publishing companies aren’t as strict with the “academic credit” rule, and as far as the big guys…all I needed was a letter from someone at my alma mater that stated that they “support” my internship. Doesn’t hurt to ask.
