post-grad unpaid interns

how do you all make this work? do you have financial support from your folks? do you save up beforehand and live on savings? do you work another full time job (that pays)? just trying to figure out how this works - especially considering that a vast majority of these unpaid internships occur in some of the most expensive housing markets in the country.

A little of both.

I live with my parents in NJ and commute to Manhattan, so I don’t pay rent. I foot my health insurance and any other bills I can by freelancing and working part-time (for pay) at a small, local magazine. I also dip into my savings when I have to.

My first post-grad internship was paid, so that helped a little, but I’m now on my third, which offers only a daily stipend for travel. I also pick up a little extra cash from another non-publishing related job, which I do for a few hours every night.

Needless to say, my social life has been shot to hell, but that’s how I make it work.

I’ve avoided post-graduate

I’ve avoided post-graduate internships like the plague. Freelancing my way into a full-time magazine position turned out to be the right choice for me.

where do you find the gigs

where do you find the gigs or how do you get the stories you’ve written into publications? do you use something like ifreelance or elance?

To be honest, I kind of

To be honest, I kind of broke the conventional mold, and networked A LOT in person. I was always at fashion, art, and music events and talked to everyone. Previous connections led to more connections. I knew that in order to stand-out, submitting electronic queries and resumes weren’t my best weapon. It all came down to making strong first impressions on the right people at the right time. As unorthodox as it is these days to suggest trying to beat the system, it’s actually what worked for me - and led me right into the publishing establishment. The irony is tremendous. I’ve learned that in order to avoid being lost in the age of prefiltered candidates, simply sidestep those filters and go directly to the people that matter. It wasn’t easy, and it’s not guaranteed. But I remain certain had I waited for some EA job to avail itself to me - or had I done a million internships, like everyone else, I wouldn’t have gotten further than (maybe) landing a bottom-rung position at a third-tier publication. Freelancing allows you to dictate your own path.

For my freelance stuff...

it’s former internships and connections.

Yup.

That’s my next plan of attack. Post-grad internships absolutely suck and I wouldn’t recommend them to anyone.
