Is it ever wise to name drop in the opening of a cover letter? I’ve done my research and I’m reading that it can be a good thing but I’m not really sure about it. I feel in a way it can work to my advantage but at the same time is it necessary to catch the readers attention?

What about just as a job description?
To the person that recommended contacting the name to be dropped… If you worked directly for a specific well-known person, as an intern or assistant, would you still need to ask them? It seems more like a job description.
Also, would you include this info in your resume, also, or just use their job title?

You don’t have to ask them, but just to be on the safe side I would ask permission before putting the person’s name on the resume or in the cover letter. Whenever I am organizing my resume, I am thinking what if the employer contacts the people I name dropped & maybe those people did not want their names mentioned without me asking first. I just think it is the polite thing to do. But like I said, it is not an absolute must to contact whoever you choose to name drop. With or without permission, I feel you should name drop since you helped out the people you worked for, the least they can do is help you out.
I would put the info on the references section of the resume. Just put their name, job title, & contact info (address, phone/cell #s, email. For the cover letter, I would state the person’s name & their job title (even if the person is well-known)& what you did when you worked for that particular person & how the job benefitted you & enhanced your skills. I’ve been in this situation in the past and I did exactly what you said, which is mention that I worked for them. It’s something that can be verified if needed. I specifically did it to avoid contacting the person for the go-ahead. I also think it’s a pretty neutral statement. You aren’t saying that they support you applying or that they’ve recommended you, but you’re still letting it be known that you have worked closely with someone of influence.
With that being said, I’m no authority on the matter, so you may want to get a second opinion.
It is more than okay to name
It is more than okay to name drop within your cover letter. Chances are the person who is reading your letter knows or has heard of the person that you mention. It shows you know your stuff & what is to be expected. Also, it makes a good impression as long as you are not arrogant about it. You can briefly explain in the cover letter or during the interview what the person has done for you, like what this person taught you, etc.
But, I would recommend that you get the person’s permission before you add his/her name. Sometimes, people do not like it when you place their names without asking first, which is understandable. I’m sure if you politely ask, those people will be more than happy for you to name drop & sometimes
they will ask you if you need a recommendation to go along w/ your cover letter & resume. Good luck.

i think its a good thing because you’ve worked so hard interning at these big huge corporations for little or mostly no pay at all, at the end of the day, the whole purpose is to use it to your advantage. most editors barely get to the resume but if you paste the cover letter directly onto the email with all those big names it should be sure to catch there eye. i’ve interned at time inc, hearst, elle, maxim, blender, and i promise it gets them everytime =)

For instance, a close family friend was a senior editor at a magazine, and she said to use her name when I applied there, so I mentioned in my cover letter that “Jane Doe told me about the position and suggested I get in touch with you.” You don’t need to write anything more than that, or explain how you know them or anything like that, but since the cover letter is what’s going to get you in the door for an interview, yes, you should toss out everything you’ve got to make sure you get in there!
