Interning in London or New York???

Hey Edsters,
I go to school in the Boston area, making it a bit more difficult to get into the magazine biz since most of it is based in New York. NYC students get the bulk of internships because they’re in the city almost year-round. I have the opportunity to study and intern in London this summer but also in New York. I’m only a sophomore so I have time but I’m just wondering which is the better option… any thoughts? Thanks!

Go to London. I went in the summer of 05 while I was junior. I loved it so much that I just competed a post grad work experience this past summer.

Post grad work in London?

Karen,

What kind of post-grad work did you do? I studied abroad in Spring ‘05 and am dying to go back but am kind of lost how to go for a few months not as a student. Would love any tips!

Post-grad work

I did a photo internship (work experience) at Ink-Publishing for a month. I would suggest to search for companies that you like to intern at and seeing if it has a UK counter part. If they do, email and see if you can do some type of internship with them. Most internships over there last about two weeks but I was able to get my two weeks extended to a month since I was coming overseas for the internship. Just keep in mind that you are going to have to support yourself while you are over there because you will most likely just be receiving a small stipend for lunch and travel within London. That’s the only thing I got. I hope this helps.

Go to London! As a sophomore, you’ll have plenty of time to pursue NY in the future. Don’t pass up the chance to study abroad while you can.

Got o London!

Go to London! I studied abroad (in Wales) during college and it was the best thing I have ever done! I wish my experience could have been combined with an internship. Once you’re back in the states, it will look really good that you lived in another country and you’ll have that worldly, European perspective. As a New Yorker, I obviously also think NYC is the place to be, but for an internship, I would pick London. It shows you’re not afraid to pick up and do something scary and exciting. Good luck!
