Sorry, I was just venting. I’ve posted on here before, but here goes:
- West Coast (L.A.)
- B.A. in English
- Currently in M.A. program for Mass Comm/Journalism
- 2+ years of editorial/PR internships
staff writer (fashion, product)
freelance (feature, fashion)
styling (editorial, commercial)
copyediting (literary)
- Currently freelancing with minimal/no pay
Getting frustrated, angry, broke. I could pitch to magazines, but I’ve kinda lost my motivation to come up with story ideas. I’d prefer freelance b/c I’m in grad school at night but the workload is so intense that I can’t work full time. Just looking for some advice/what I’m doing wrong. I’ve applied to all the “big time” mags with no success, so I’m just working the “up-and-coming” circuit hoping for a break in L.A.
I know people replied that your post is useless but I do sympathize. I am wondering where/what school you’re completing your M.A. program for grad school?
Have you checked out your school’s career center and tried to network with alumni?
I’ve heard that that’s one of the greatest things about going back to school…. the alumni network and professors.
Try submitting your resume to them. :)
Its okay to vent, we have all been there & are still there to a certain degree. But I think its the way you went about your post that made us think the opposite. You came off as I am the only one who is need of a job. Judging by your current reply, it wasn’t your intention to sound self-entitled. When you are frustrated, you end up saying things you don’t mean to say. Thank you for saying sorry, it takes a lot to admit when you are wrong & have to explain yourself.
I would say don’t give up & continue to write. I’m sure everyone, including yourself has told you that. But its the truth. When I graduated last May, I never heard any responses from the employers I sent my resumes to. It was annoying. I kept saying, what does it take to get a job, am I choosing the wrong career path? When I least expected it, something did come my way. Even though my job is small, it better than nothing. The same thing will happen to you. We all have a purpose in life, for some people, it takes longer. And there is nothing wrong with that.
I think its fantastic that you are in grad school. Not many are willing to go back to school for another degree. That will look great on your resume & emphasizes you want to learn. Soak up everything you can in school. You should really try freelancing. The more experience, the better. Whoever you write for, might know someone looking for a job postion to be filled. Contacts are essential in this business because writing is a tough field, like with anything. Just be wary, some people will enjoy your work & others will reject your work (which you are experiencing now). As much as it hurts & you want to curse everything, but take that rejection as an experience & do something beneficial with that. Do things that hold your interests & make you happy. Just don’t throw in the towel & do what you have do to become a writer. Best of luck!
sorry not to be rude but this post is sort of useless. this is not like Monster or something….can you give us more information? are you in school? working (in media)? looking for a job to supplement interning??
