I had a great informational interview with a top editor at the beginning of this year who gave me some contacts to follow up with and also her business card and personal email and told me to contact her if I have any questions/update her/etc.
Anyway, I sent her an email a few months after that thanking her, talking about what I was doing since speaking with her, about what she’s done at her magazine recently, etc, and no response - which I thought was fair enough, I’m sure she’s busy.
Anyway, some of her contacts that she gave me have ended up helping me out and I emailed her recently (it’s been about 7 months) telling her what happened with them, what I’m doing with them, etc, generally just an update.
Is there something I’m doing wrong? I don’t want to seem too OTT or stalkerish but I’d like to keep in contact with her because she seemed very willing to help me out and I had a great informational interview with her.
So I’m just after some advice as to how to keep in contact after informationals :) I also live in another state so email is pretty much the only way to keep in contact.
Thank you! :)

I'm sorry to drag this up again :(
But is it worth emailing them even if they haven’t responded to your email? I’d love to keep in touch (I mean, networking is great and all, but I’m not even asking for a job because I’m not even in the same country) but the contacts seemed genuinely helpful and kind when I spoke to them, and it’s a bit unnerving and worrying to not hear a response! Or am I not picking up the hint that they’re ignoring me? (I jest, I jest - at least I hope so!)
Sounds like you’re doing
Sounds like you’re doing all the right things! I think it’s great you let her know that her contacts ended up helping you—Editors LOVE to hear that, it makes it so rewarding!
I’m a mid-level editor, and the one piece of advice I can offer is to keep these e-mails short. Sometimes I get these loooooong e-mails from people I did informationals with. I love hearing from them, but length=overwhelming. So, for a quick update, I’d only write 3-5 sentences, rather than a long letter. But, seriously, sounds like you’re doing great!
Thank you for the support
Thank you for the support dramavixen! It’s nice to hear
I’ve just realised that it probably wasn’t such a great idea that I emailed just a few days ago during Paris Fashion Week when I’m sure editorial is busy… whoops.
Even though I haven’t been receiving any replies (I’ve emailed twice in about 8 months) should I still continue or is it a hint to stop? The emails have been about mid-length (maybe 8-10 sentences?) so I’ll try to keep it shorter.
Thanks so much again, I really appreciate it :)
