I came across your letter here and wanted to take a, pardon the pun, shot at answering you. Without seeing your resume, it’s hard to tell why you aren’t getting responses. I imagine it’s threefold - one you’re applying for jobs in other cities; two, it’s an *extremely* tiny and competitive field; and three, your resume might look far too much like you’re a photographer.

I’ve been a Photo Editor and Producer for well over a decade, and when I’ve come across resumes from photographers looking to practice another facet of the industry, sad to say, it’s met with reserve. Meaning, Photo Editors cannot have a conflict of interest with the photography they’re assigning. Ie., a photographer who is working as a Photo Editor may very well indeed be too biased, or attempt to get assigned to shoot the project themselves. The photo industry, I’ve learned, is very territorial!

Companies, in my experience, have been very hesitant to hire photographers for Photo Editing positions for this very reason. I’ve worked with photographers who refused to have managers, producers or assistants that shoot on their own. It means that if the assistant or manager was hired by an outside source to shoot something, it puts the photographer they’re working with at variance. (Similarly, this happens in the Film Industry. For example, contracts to work as an assistant to a producer or director explicitly say that the individual hired cannot have any outside projects. To breach the contract means losing the job and potentially a budding crap reputation.)

So…..that being said, I’d recommend you dial down your shooting experience by looking at it from at Editor’s perspective. Turn your assignment work into language that is as though you produced and edited all that work. This can come up in an interview, but right now in the application stage, you need to just look better on paper to land the interview first. It’s not that being a photographer yourself is a shameful dirty secret, but going from a photographer to an editor as a new career might put you in a bit of a tricky spot after 10+ years because there are several Photo Editors that do have 10+years experience in the field.
